I just read in my Mayo Clinic book that estrogen causes the itching that i am having. Could be something more serious but I would have other symptoms as well. Anyone else have this? Any cures or remedies?

I am going nuts. I am 38 weeks 1 day.

At 34wks, I started itching horribly...especially on my belly, arms, and feet. I already have skin issues on my legs too. Nothing was making it better. I finally made an appt. with my dermatologist when I was 36wks. They did a biopsy on my arms, and gave me some pretty heavy duty itch stuff. Well, the biopsy didn't matter b/c I had the babies the next day. You could go see a dermatologist if possible.

While I was pregnant w/ the girls, I read a ton of posts on here about something called PUPPS which makes you REALLY itchy - I do not know anything much more about it - (I personally did not get it) but you may want to just call your dr. they may have some answers for you! GOOD LUCK!!! and bless your heart! I know that itching has to be AWFUL!!!

Oh my gosh!! YES YES YES!! I had this and it was HOOOOORRRRIIIBBBBLLLLEE!! I thought it was from the Nifedipine I was taking but I do not, in hindsight, believe that it was. The Peri prescribed me Vistaril (like Benadryl) to help w/ itching.. It sort of helped.

It can also be a liver problem.. in my case, it was not. It was my feet that felt like they were on fire and it was terrible. I lathered them with lotion and that helped a bit.

I feel for you. That was extremely unpleasant.

I had it, too, and it was horribly uncomfortable but not serious. You really should, however, mention it to your doctor because when I told mine he ordered some liver function tests to make sure everything was working properly there. Evidently it can cause itching & it isn't uncommon to have some liver issues late in pregnancy, especially with twins. Probably it's just the hormones, but it never hurts to be sure.

I started getting itchy at 34 weeks. I suddenly developed stretch marks on my belly and they were bright red. The dr said I had PUPPS so I read up and found that it is common on the belly and can spread from there. It went to my upper thighs and the backs of my upper arms. I didn't read anything about the hands and feet but that's actually where it was the worst in the beginning, esp between my fingers and toes. The dr said I could take Benedryl but it really only helps you to sleep through the itchiness. She also said I could use OTC hydrocortisone cream which helped a little. The good thing for me was that it peaked after about a week and then it was much more manageable. By the time I gave birth (38 weeks) I wasn't itchy anymore.
I would mention it to my dr, as a previous poster said it can sometimes be related to liver problems. Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!

I had terrible itching with my son.
I kept a bottle of really rich lotion and one light lotion in the referidge and used them a lot and it helped and felt sooo good in the summer heat on my skin!
Also try benedryl anti-itch lotion and alveno oatmeal baths or you can fill up a sock with oatmeal and let it seap in your bath, that is if you're still able to get in and out of the bath without too much trouble.
I never went to see a doctor about it but I was sooo itchy.

    Hope these tips help!!

    Ohhhhhhhhh girl.

I had the liver problem one. It is called Cholestasis. The only way to know is to get your blood drawn and they can tell from there. I think the normal range was 20 something and mine was up to 100.

IT WAS HORRIBLE! I would use wet towels to wash my body down. No lotion would help and bendryal was nothing! The liver does something funky (I cant remember what) and bile gets into the bloodstream and causes itching from the inside...all over, but mostly in your palms and feet.

I would seriously say something to your dr and it can be harmful to the babies. I was to not go over 37 weeks (I didn't make it there, 35.2 my water broke).

Oh I was prescribed "Ursidol" and it was my magic drug! Things were great after that!

I had PUPPS which was no fun. I had to wear suran wrap on my belly for each NST because the gel and monitors irritated it. I felt like an alien at times! Hopefully, you will get it under control.

You should definately mention it to your doctor. I had my blood drawn about 36 weeks also to check for Cholestasis, I didn't have it and they still gave me a perscription for the itching (pill) and it worked.

Thank you for the responses. I mentiioned it to the doctor and he said to keep him posted. I think i should ask to check the blood for the liver conditiion. He must have thought I did not have other symptoms to make him concerned, I dont know.

I mistyped in my original post, i am 36 weeks and 2 days.
