JT has a scratch across the back of the neck...looks like rugburn, I'm assuming from the straps on the carseat rubbing him bc he only seems to get this after a car ride. I don't know what to do about it though the straps are at the highest point and he is no where near the 32" length requirement and if we put those little animals on the straps it will do nothing for across the back where it seems to be hitting him. I'm pretty sure its bc he gets pissed sometimes at being in it and is also so damn curious he wants to see everything, thus straining his neck! What do I do???

    ps...we have the Graco Snugride

We have a different carseat, and I'm not sure what the Graco one looks like, but I know in our carseats, the straps (coming out from the back of the carseat) are supposed to be positioned below their shoulders, so my girls are still one or two slots down from the top. It sounds like maybe the straps are too high and this could be causing some of the irritation.

I can't quite figure out how he would be getting a scratch across the back of his neck from the straps of the carseat, so I'm wondering if the straps are too high? The straps should be AT or right below his shoulders. Good luck!

I'm also wondering if they are too high, as Aimee said, for rear facing the straps should be AT or BELOW their shoulders, not above them. The strap covers work good for keeping the straps from rubbing the sides of their neck (I have the really thin ones not the big bulky ones). I have a graco snugride also.

One of my girls started to get scratches on the back of her neck and I just figured out that it is from my jogger. There is some velcro holding the cusion (or something) in place, and when she starts to squirm a lot, she must expose the velcro. Anyway....the covers for the car seat straps work really well and they are not expensive. Are you sure it is the car seat? GL!

No its not his bib bc I don't let them wear them in the carseat and yes the straps are below shoulders. I'm not sure what else could be causing it? I'll keep an eye on him and see if it gets really red after doing something else...so far its only car rides.

    MrsWright,

Funny, our babies seem to have a lot in common (messy eaters and now this). My babies get something like that on the back of their neck only mine is under the hair - back of neck/back of head area. It looks more like a rash or rug burn than scratches and it seems to come and go. I notice it more after they have been held for a while like after a feeding. I figured it was from the heat from our hand or arm and was like a heat rash. I was going to ask the pedi last appt. and completely forgot. Do you notice it any other time other than after a car ride?

Is it on the back of his head where it rests against the carseat (and rubs when he turns his head)? Could just be an irritation from the carseat fabric and him squirming. It's probably nothing to really worry about, just one of those "things" that seem to happen from time to time with kids that make no sense whatsoever! :p

Wait until they are sporting random bruises and scratches and you have no clue where they came from or when they got them!

That's a great point. It could be a heat rash. Is there a head rest on his car seat? (sorry I'm not sure what the snugride looks like) I would keep an eye out for it after bib time too. Mine have marks that show up much later than I would expect. Good thing is they go away quickly! :)
