Scoliosis Anyone?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was in middle school. It's never bothered my too much. The last time I had x rays for it was about 10 to 12 years ago in a ifferent state and it showed that my spine was curving and twisting. Now that I'm pregnant, my upper back has REALLY started hurting and the Dr put me on some pain med's to take at night so I can get some sleep.

But my main concern is the delivery. I'm 35 so they've already told me I might have to have a c-section anyway. But does anyone else have scoliosis? I don't know what the risks are if I try to go natural. And I don't know how an epi. would work out. I can't imagine they'd be able to get a needle into my spine. I want to be awake for the births if I can. And my Dr doesn't know much about the condition. She's never dealt with it before.

    Any advise?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis around age 10 and ended up with an 8 degree S curve by the time I stopped growing (down from 25 degrees when I was diagnosed). You can barely tell unless I bend over. Nonetheless, I was worried about being able to get an epidural in when I was pregnant with my daughter 2 years ago so I asked to meet with the anesthesiologist in advance. She looked at my back and said it would be no problem and it wasn't. My counsin has metal rods in her back for her scoliosis and she didn't have an epidural but I think she could have had a spinal if she had wanted one - not entirely sure.

Bottom line - I was worried about the same thing and it turned out to be no big deal. I would def recommend meeting with the anesthesiologist before you get too close. It gave me peace of mind!

I have scoliosis in my middle back so I had no problem with an epidural. I can tell you that from the strain and the pushing I was in quite a lot of pain after the delivery where "my spot" is.

I also was diagnosed with scoliosis around the age of 10. My curve had grown to a 45 degree angle by the time I reached high school and I needed surgery. They placed 3 screws and a rod into my spine. It wasn't totally fixed because I still have alot of pain and now that I'm preggo it's sooo much worse. I had my son vaginally and I had an epidural. It took the doc. 2 pokes to get it in the right place due to the scoliosis but it wasn't so bad and I did great with the epidural in place. This time around I'm having a C-Section and I'm worried about the epidural (only because they are cutting me open). But I'm sure everything will turn out fine! Good Luck!!
