HI! I have 3 month twin boys that were born at 33 weeks. Right now my larger twin (my smaller twin had severe IUGR) is sleeping 10p-6a consistently and then being fed every three hours during the day. They are both taking a nap after each feed so that's a total of 5 naps daily with only a catnap after their 6 pm feed. My smaller baby has persistent hypolycemia so he cannot sleep through the night right now. So, we can do a little bit of a different schedule until he catches up. I would like to get my bigger baby sleeping 10-12 hours at night, but it seems that is typically accomplished with only 3 naps daily. Is it too early to expect 10-12 hour nights? At what age do they generally do this? I just don't think he could handle only 3 naps each day. Right now, he's still tiring after being awake 1.5-2 hours.

    Thanks for your insight...

    Hi,

I think your larger twin is doing great for his age... most babies don't sleep 12 hours until 6-12 months.

I think it was at 5 mos that I started getting my kids on a 2 -3 nap a day schdule. before that, i was psyched if they slept at all. Get Weissbluth's book and start implementing around 4-5 mos and you'll be tee'd up for success.

My twins will be 3 mos on 8/30, and just last week they kind of moved themselves onto a 3 nap schedule - BUT they are not sleeping through the night.

Here's a typical day (not schedule, but routine) for us...

    Wake up between 7:15-8:15
Unswaddle, play in crib for 15-30 minutes
    1st bottle
Play on bed with Mommy and big sister and down for first nap (within 90 minutes of wake up)
    Nap for 1.5-2.5 hrs
2nd bottle (3.5-4 hrs after last feed)
Play in bouncies or on playmat and down for 2nd nap (within 90-120 minutes of waking from last nap)
    Nap for 2-3 hrs
3rd bottle (3.5-4 hrs after last feed)
Play with Daddy home from work!
Catnap for 45 minutes in swing
Bath, Read, Bottle, Swaddle Bed by 7:30 at the latest

One usually wakes around 3:30 and the other around 5 for a bottle.

    Hope that helps!

    Suzi -

That sounds like a great schedule, except for the not sleeping through the night. That's why I'm afraid to mess with anything. I would love to feed them at least every 3.5 hours during the day though. The 3 hour feeds are wearing me out. That way I could let them sleep a little longer each nap also. Thanks for your insight.

My boys, born at 34 w 1d, ar also 3 mos. They eat on demand during the day - usually every 3 to 4 hours. Their naps are ALL over the place. There's no rhyme or reason to it at all. At night, they go down for good after a bottle at around 9 pm and don't wake again to eat til about 5:30, so that's about 8 hours. And we're pretty darn proud of that. They do, however, get up sometimes just being gassy/fussy.

Naps are important but I can't figure out how to regulate that. As long as they sleep at night, the naps will work themselves out, I guess!

And I am eading Weissbluth's book, too, like a pp . . . in this court, the jury's still out on whether it works!

My DS started to sleep through the night at 3 mos and my DD at 4 mos, to the day (10-12 hours). They fed every 3 hours on demand and still do now, and we are also giving foods now 1-3 times a day which helps keep them down for the night; unless one wakes up gassy or fussy or teething (can't figure out which) but I don't generally give them a bottle in the middle of the night anymore; I usually just burp and or rock them to a partial sleep and put them back to bed. I will give a bottle if they didn't get alot during their last feed on occasion. It sounds like you have a pretty good system going. We use the 'Baby Whisperer Solves all your sleeping problems' a bit, we just did the best we could w/ twins to modify her suggestions.

My babies are 4 months old and still take a nap after each feeding during the day. They also eat every 3 hours. DD will sleep 8-10 hours and DS sleeps 11-12 hours usually. DS will sometimes nap longer and go 3 1/2 hours between feedings but can rarely make it to 4. How many oz does your bigger twin eat at each feeding?
