Scared!

So I'm new to your forum, and boy, do I wish I had found this website 2 years ago! Anyways, I have 21-month-old boy/girl twins, and I just found out I'm 5 weeks pregnant. I'm very scared, for two reasons: 1. My twins were born at 24 weeks and were in the NICU for 124 days, and 2. I don't think I could go through that again!

I can't get in to see my OBGYN until August, but my GP is optimistic that I am not considered high-risk this time. She attributes the prematurity to the fact that I delivered twins. Of course it's still too early to tell whether it's twins again, but I'm TERRIFIED that it could be! Both pregnancies were natural, no fertility drugs or IVF. Has anyone out there had twins twice (without using 'help')?! And has anyone gone full term with a singleton after severely premature twins?! I just some reassurance...thank you!

Congratulations and welcome! I can definitely understand your fears after having babies in the NICU for that long, but I am sure that because it was your first pregnancy and it was twins that that is the reason you delivered early. For now, I would take it one day at a time and take comfort in the fact that now your body knows what to do.

I am 8 weeks pregnant today and my babies are 6 months old. I won't have my first ultrasound for another 2 1/2 weeks and I'm dying to know whether it's one or it's two. My babies are the 8th set of twins in our family - all natural, except for one set - so needless to say the waiting is killing me and my husband. This pregnancy was a surprise but we are excited and trying to take it one day at a time - there's too much to worry about or think about if I let myself. This is a great place to find support and I'm sure there's someone on here who can offer more words of wisdom from experience. Keep us posted and stay positive!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! :welcome: to Twinstuff! Glad you found us!

Every pregnancy is different. My babies were all born after 38 weeks, so I can't help you by personal experience. I know there are indeed some women who just can't bake babies long enough, so I do understand you being worried. It is all unknown. I hope you have a LONG and healthy pregnancy!

okay, i know that this isn't the same but i figured i might as well share my story. Had my daughter at 36 weeks to the day(emergency csection) and when we found out i was pregnant with twins a little over a year later i was scared to death of them coming even earlier than alyssa. Well low and behold they came a whole week later at 37 weeks to the day by emergency csection also and i really think they would of gone maybe another day or two if we hadn't lost my daughter when we did. So basically what i am saying is that every pregnancy is different and really there is no way to know what's going to happen, but to just watch everything closely and hope for the best. Our bodies work in mysterious ways and i wish you the best of luck with a full 40 week pregnancy. You can do it.

I can understand your concern and of course nobody can say what will happen but I would try not to worry. Most likely you had a premature birth because you were carrying twins. My girls were born 5 weeks early, which really isn't too bad but was still really scary, so I totally get your worry. Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope you have a healthy nine months! :)

  5. Thank you for your encouragement. I'm going to try not to worry too much. Hopefully all will go well...

    Good luck and welcome!

I'm so glad your twins were strong and made it through NICU. You just keep telling that new baby to stay in there until your due date!

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I don't have a twin story for you, but I have a friend who had her singleton baby girl at 25 weeks. Her daughter did phenomenally in spite of the fact that they had very little prior warning that she'd be born early. No steroid shots or anything. On her second pregnancy she began having problems at 23 weeks. She wound up in the hospital. I believe she had some kind of fever or infection with some thinning and dilation. They really thought he would be born at 24 weeks. But because the doctors knew her history and were extra cautious with her, she got through it. She was released from the hospital around 29 weeks, and she wound up delivering her son at 37 weeks. He was 9lbs 10 oz even at 3 weeks early!!! So I think you have a major advantage in two things...1. your first birth involved twins, a factor you probably won't have this time... 2. the doctors know your history and they will be extra cautious in looking at signs and symptoms of premature labor. There is a lot they can do now to proactively prevent you from having your singleton early even if your body is trying to boot the baby out.
