Scared- Blood and fluid

I am 12 weeks pg with twins. I was diagnosed with a SCH at 6 weeks and had a major bleed and bleeding/spotting for several weeks. Last week my US revealed that the clot was healing and was almost gone. I had stopped bleeding until tonight. I was sitting on the sofa and started spotting/dripping bright red blood. I decided to go to bed and rest. Within an hour I woke up and had soaked through a pad and through my pants with a mixture of blood and fluid. They told me a chance that I might bleed again because of the clot, but the fluid-like loss has me extremely concerned. I have mild discomfort in my uterus. Could this be the clot or did my membrane rupture? I will go in tomorrow morning for a scan but I am up now beside myself.

Personally, I would call and go in. Trust your gut. I had a SCH as well, and there was a lot of blood the first day. The next time I saw blood, it was just spotting about five days after the initial bleeding. I would go and get checked out. And update us when you can.

Hi, I ended up going back to bed. Since I'm 12 weeks I'm not sure L&D would even take me, would they? The bleeding is nearly gone now, but still lightly spotting bright red. That doesn't concern me as much as the fluid. I'm not sure if SCH blood can be very watery or not. It just seemed so similar to when my waters broke with DD (though she was term). I have been awake most of the night praying that everything is OK and that this is just the SCH's last hurrah, so to speak. I will go in this morning to find out. This is so frustrating. . .

They would have probably done blood work and an emergency scan last night had you gone in. Hope all is well.

L&D would always take you. You don't have to necessarily be in labor for them to see you. They are who you see during off hours, etc. Think of them as your doctor when your doctor is done for the day. Never hesitate because you don't think they will take you.
    Please update after your appt.

I just got home. The babies are OK (thank God!) but I am bleeding fast and furiously. DR told me to stay in bed all day. Before I left I soaked a pad in 15 minutes. I have saturated 4 pads since I woke up and when I got to the doctors office I passed a palm-sized clot. I am very relieved that the babies are OK. the clot is sitting above my cervix and is very large. I am concerned about the amount of bleeding I am having. How long can I sustain this? My nerves are rattled.

So glad to hear! Feet up! Do as little as possible! Did the dr put you on strict bedrest? When I had it, she pulled me out of work and put me on bedrest. I would lay low for a while if you can.

    Keep us posted.

 Glad the babies are okay. I agree with Meaghan, I would do strict bedrest (even if the dr. didn't put you on strict bedrest) for awhile, or as much as you can.

Thanks so much for your support. It means a lot. :)
She didnt put me on bedrest other than today. I will stay in bed all day and night and pray that the bleeding slows (or stops) by morning. This pregnancy never ceases to amaze me. I never knew someone could bleed this much and be OK, let alone during pregnancy an have the babies be OK! Six weeks ago when this all started I thought for sure I lost the babies when I awoke soaked in blood through pad and pants and then passed a large clot. This time is even worse--way more blood and clot was so much larger. Just last week they told me that the clot was healing well so I'm not sure what happened. I am scared about what this means for the babies throughout the pregnancy and what risks it continues to pose, but I'm also trying to take it a day at a time. This is so hard.

Glad the babies are ok!! I agree, strict bed rest and TONS of fluids and good healthy food. Do not be afraid to go to L&D or back to your Dr if you are uneasy or things change. It is okay to be checked out as often as you feel is needed. Follow your gut always!!

 Meagan's right- always go to L&D if you are scared. I went at 11 weeks (thought I was 7 weeks) with bleeding- that's where they found 2 babies measuring 11 weeks. :) I'm so sorry you are bleeding- it's so scary. Rest & drink fluids as much as possible.

Thanks again. I had no idea L&D would take me. I figured I'd have to go to the ER and be pushed to the bottom of the list since I'm still so early. I've not experienced this, but have heard nightmare stories. Since I'm still seeing my RE, I went there--I will be released in a week after my NT scan if all goes well and then will start with my OB a couple weeks later. I am trying to drink lots of water but drinking upsets my stomach -- makes me feel a bit nauseous.

Try lemonade. I couldn't do water well in the first tri, either, but made homemade lemonade & drank gallons. ;)

My best friend had bleeding like you are discribing, although she was pregnant with a singleton and not twins, but Joshua is now almost 4 months old. So yes bleeding in pregnancy is terrifying, I had bleeding with the twins, it doesnt always end bad. Get lots of rest and drink lots.

Cheezewhiz- thanks for the lemonade suggestion. I will have to give it a try when I'm up again.

Thanks everyone for the support. It is so nice to have somewhere to turn during this scary time. :)

Thanks so much. I am up and still bleeding bright red but hope that it has slowed down. I will know more as I move around this morning. I'm praying it has tapered down to spotting.

I bled tremendously with my pg. I thought each time that was it and ended up being okay. Just try to stay off your feet until it completely stops! My L&D took me when I was 12 weeks although with my first pregnancy I was told L&D wouldn't even look at you till 20 weeks, only the ER would see you.

I second the lemonade idea..I poured some lemon juice in bottled water and lived on that for the first trimester!

    Get lots of rest!

I bled twice with my first, the second time was at eleven weeks and I thought for sure I would lose the baby. They couldn't find the bleeding on the sono, so I think that made me even more scared. But today I have a perfect 14month old :) Our bodies are amazing! I'm sure in a few months you'll be holding your babies and this will all be a distant memory.

Slipper- my NT is Monday. I'm glad its so close.

Thanks for the stories--it helps to hear positive outcomes.

I came home early today because I started cramping (more or less, it is a tightness that I seem to get when bleeding) and the bleeding, which had slowed dramatically this morning, started to increase a bit this afternoon. I am laying on the sofa now so I hope it gets better.

The tightness concerns me, that to me sounds like contractions. I would mention that to your doctor.

Slipper- when I had my first major bleed I had severe cramps for an hour and was told that when there is blood or clots in uterus it gets irritated and cramps. I got the impression that there was nothing they could/would do for that. Ill be so glad when I finally get transferred to my OB as he is so much more responsive... I did have a lot of tightness with DD which I assumed were BH. I carried her until I went into labor at 39w6d. I wonder if part of it is just my normal??? Gah, I don't know. :unknw:

I know my best friend went through something similar to your story with her youngest Joshua. She was put on strict bedrest and on anti contrax meds at 12 weeks. It just seems odd to me that they arent a little mroe proactive for you.

hmm, that's good to know. I guess I will monitor it closely and ask again if it doesn't subside. I'm wondering if that is beyond my REs scope of practice???

I dont know. I have no experienc with an RE so I dont know exactly what they do cover. Maybe ask for a Peri?

I defend think its time to go to a peri. Most re's only see people till 8 weeks or so. A peri or obser would be much better equipped to deal with what you are going through.

I hope everything continues to be fine. I agree with the previous posters that it's time to be at the OB or a peri specialist. REs make babies, but they don't really monitor pregnancies past about 6-8 weeks typically.

Oh yeah-I was seeing my OB by 10 weeks. At 8 weeks along, I was released from the RE's office with both pregnancies. I would definitely refer to your OB-and they can put you in touch with a peri(I think. The only peri I saw was when I had my u/s's). Call the OB and make them aware of the situation. I would imagine you would be on bedrest.

I would put yourself on strict bed rest until you meet with an OB or a Peri. I don't know what an RE is but is sounds like what you are dealing with may be beyond their scope. Activity can make you contract and if there is a clot that has not dissolved any contractions may irritate your uterus and clot and you could bleed. I would def request an OB or Peri appointment and stay off your feet until then. My SCH was at 6 weeks but with rest it went away and I did not bleed anymore. Have they done blood work? With a lot of bleeding you want to make sure you don't become anemic. I was also on a medication from 16 weeks to 32 weeks for contractions as well as progesterone injections. Those are also something you may ask about. Are you Rh - ? If so did they give you Rhogam as soon as you started to bleed? Just wondering... these are all things that my OB did. Very proactive and I delivered healthy babies at 35 and 5 with no NICU time! Take it easy!

Thanks. My RE sees patients until the NT scan then releases them. I have an appointment scheduled with my OB for Nov 8 (2 weeks after my NT, which is on Monday). I was on PIO until 11 weeks.I think that if the bleeding isn't almost done over the weekend I will call the OB and see if I can get in sooner. I am feeling down because I really want to enjoy this pregnancy and right now it is just fear. :-(

I definitely second the perinatologist. They deal with multiples all the time and the pregnancy part of it and see high risk patients day in and day out. I'm sure your OB could give you some names and referrals if you asked. My OB worked in tandem with the peri (I have IC), and while I only saw the peri at the end of the pregnancy (for NST) it was nice knowing that my OB consulted with him every step of the way. Kind of a checks and balances to make sure nothing was missed. I don't know much about what REs do, but for peace of mind you might want to see your OB or peri. You will never regret getting a 2nd opion - even if it is a bit earlier than usual. You are your own advocate in the medical world and know your body and what it needs. I'm so sorry you're going through this. One day when you have your two little ones running around it will all feel like a distant memory, but I know until then it's so unpredictable.
