Our girls are suffering from scalded butts. It has been happening off and on for about a month. We think we have narrowed it down to a reaction to tomatoes, but we are not 100% sure. It seems every time they eat something with tomatoes in it they are scalded by their poop. We immediately change them as soon as we have seen them go, but it still scalds them horribly bad. Allison was almost blistered two days ago and was in so much pain that every time she pee'd she screamed. We were literally changing her diaper every 30 minutes all day long just to try to keep her dry. She is still horribly red, irritated, and swollen. Sarah woke me up last night having pooped in the middle of the night and she, too, was so red. I have bathed them in oatmeal which seems to have helped, I have let them run around naked to dry themselves out, and I have lathered them in A&D ointment and balmex.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Should I take them to the doc? Is there any other kind of food that may cause such a reaction?

    Thanks so much!

Is the skin broken? I would try neosporin and see if that helps and then coat in A&D ointment. Catherine got a rash like that last summer at the beach from the sand and it was awful! I hope it clears up soon. If it doesn't respond to treatment in a few days I would go see the pedi. It could get infected! Mine recently had staph infections on their bums and they had to be treated with antibiotics.

Oh, poor dears!! Corn does that to Casey. It's awful. I have banned corn from our freezer selection. At that age, certain fruits also caused that reaction - blueberries, strawberries, and grapes if they had more than a handful.

One thing that helps Casey with the corn burns is PinXav. You usually have to ask the pharmacist for it because every time I've purchased it, it's been hidden behind their counter for some reason. It has calomine or something in it that helps soothe the skin besides just protecting it.

I don't have good advice, but I am so sorry to hear that! It sounds awful and I hope you get it cleared up quickly! [IMG] [IMG]

Alana's bottom gets blistered like that from certain foods. The first one we figured out was mandarin oranges (which she LOVES) so we stopped feeding her those. Next was raisins (figured that out after my mom gave them to them by the boxful last time we were up there). The acid in tomatoes could very easily be the problem. The only thing I usually do is lather on the Desitin at every diaper change when it happens.

I noticed that when I make my own gracy (tomato sauce) they have nasty poops and more reashes. It must be the concentrated amoutn of real tomatoes I use. The jared stuff is prob more chemically altered and not so acidic.

I would stay away from tomatoes for a bit...see if it pops up again. Maybe they are mildy allergic (meaning only through feces)...

Good luck and talk to the pedi too..

We use Vaseline!! It's done wonders for us. When the girls get red, we put it on immediately and it clears up in just a short amount of time. It also doesn't burn like some of the diaper rash ointments.

Vaseline or Bag Balm, the balm is in a green tin can, and it's used on cows utters. I know that sounds weird, but it works! You can purchase it at Walmarts, Target, and some grocery stores. They both work wonders, just cake it on!!! Also, you need to rinse your wet wipes, they will irritate, and burn too.

I haven't read all the responses but I swear by the hair dryer on a low setting it dries everything up and it clears even the nastiest diaper rash up. Good luck.

I would stay away from acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus and see if that helps. As for the rash itself, I also second using Vaseline to help the skin calm down and soothe.

Oh, also try using just a soft cloth with water to clean up their butts instead of the baby wipes. The cleanser in the wipes can irritate sore butts.
