We got the girls on prevacid last week after alllll the vomiting issues, etc. No change, yet at least. Saw the new pediatrician today for a weight check and Ryleigh has only gained 1 ounce and Marleigh gained 3, in 5 days. He said he would like to see their weight gain a little higher, but at least they're not losing weight. Then we went over the 15 talk about how they're refluxers and if they're not in pain and they're gaining weight, then all is good- in his book at least. I brought up the fact that Marleigh will NOT swallow medicine. It's like she knows it's medicine. He, again, told me how to put it back into the corner pocker of their mouth along the gumline and that way she can't spit it out. Sure buddy. Tried it, didn't work. So I gave it to her again, she somehow swallowed it and about 2 minutes later I was craddling her in my arm and she threw up everywhere. I'm talking the poor kid hasn't eaten in 3 hours and she managed to throw up easily 2 ounces. It was all over my floor. So I called the doctor and talked to the nurse and she told me to put it in 1/2 ounce of formula and give it to her and then once she's drank it, resume with the regular bottle. Did that, she drank the formula with the medicine and then drank one ounce of the regular bottle and burped- threw up everything she just ate. I called the doctor back to tell them and she told me that Marleigh might have a virus (since she ate 3 hours ago and threw up that much now) and to take her down to the children's hospital. WHY? So I can sit there all for them to tell me she has reflux and they can't explain anything else and to follow up with your fabulous office in 24 hours or if the situation gets worse? I THINK it might, just might, be as bad as it can get- so, thanks, but I'll just stay home and deal with it.

I just want to :BDH: something, this doctor, the nurse and everyone in my path because this is SO frustrating. After she vomited this last time she fell asleep- would NOT eat anymore. She just passed out right on my chest. Gosh, and I thought the pregnancy was hard..that was the easy part.

just wanted to let you know that it took 2 full weeks for the prevacid to kick in with my DD, and yes, it was two weeks of pure hell... also, if you can, try to give the prevacid at least 30 minutes before feeding. that way, if they throw up, at least some of it will have passed out of the stomach. what method are you using to give the prevacid? in a syringe with water? have you tried breaking it up and putting it in her cheek, then giving her a paci to help her swallow it down? maybe if it isn't liquidy she won't try to spit it out...

oh, and not to be a downer, but prevacid won't stop the vomiting, but it will make it so it doesn't hurt when they do vomit. sorry...

Would this be to the ER? As much as I would hate to take a small baby to the ER ( :bad: ), maybe you will get some answers there? They are usually more aggressive with testing, so it might be worth a shot. I'm sorry to hear that you all are still struggling so hard.

Are they having soaking wet diapers?
Has Reglan or Erythromycin ever been mentioned, I don't recall in your case?

Prevacid will not help the vomiting, it will help with the pain associated with the vomiting. Thickening is the only thing that is going to help with the amount of vomit. If she is still puking 3 hours after she ate it's possible that she has a gastric motility problem. My twins did, and the only thing that helped was Reglan.

    Hey Becky,
Yes it;s the children's hospital. Should I really go? I've thought about it before in hopes that they would be more aggresive with the problem, but I was told by an anethesiologist that they wouldn't be. That's why I haven't been down that road yet. Wet diapers- yes. Reglan- we are trying to avoid because of side effects. I know the prevacid won't help with vomiting, but so why did we switch? The zantac seemed to be helping with the pain, so why in the heck did he switch me! This is driving me mad.

Before you go get involved in going to the ER and such for Reflux, I would try the thickening again. A combination of the Prevacid and cereal may just be what works.

If I had exhausted every option/doctor/remedy, and they were still not gaining weight, then yes, I would go.

I understand. I avoided it too, until I felt like I had no other choice. We didn't have any side effects, fwiw.

Most likely because their weight gain was not adequate and he still thinks they are not drinking enough due to the pain. But it could be that they are drinking plenty, and just refluxing it all, which can be remedied with adding the rice cereal back in.

I know you are probably so sick of me telling you to thicken( :escape: ), but did you really give it a fair shot? Like a week?
(I'm probably not that far, you can drive down and :slap: me if you want)

I agree- they're definitely drinking enough..but so much comes back up that it doesn't matter how much they're drinking.

You aren't that far, but I wouldn't pack these kids up just to come yell!! Kidding. I think you're right.. maybe I didn't give it a good shot. I will try some tonight. Should I try gerber or beech nut? With Alimentum, which of those cereals makes it the thickest?

I would try 2 teaspoons per oz of the Beechnut. Really it doesn't matter which one, but I found that the Beechnut dissolved a little better, and didn't clump as much causing problems with the nipple. Stick with it for a few days.

*Just a warning, they might want less of the bottle in the first few days, but they will be keeping more of it down!

As far as the Prevacid goes, I just stuck the 1/2 tab in the side of their cheek and squirted some water in with a syringe to help it dissolve.

     Reflux sucks.

See they told me to use 1/2 teaspoon for each ounce and it didn't make much of a difference- that's why I stopped. Can I do 2 teaspoons on my own without him telling me to? I know I'm the mom and I will do what I want, but just wondering. How old were your LOs when they told you to use 2 teaspoons per ounce?
Did I mention mine were two months old yesterday? Crap..where's the time gone already.

My twins were 2 weeks old when we started 2tsp(actually 2.5) per oz. It's fine. I am not surprised that the 1/2tsp didn't work, it's just not thick enough to do anything. Go for it, 2tsp!

    Happy 2 months!
