I read somewhere that you should never carry both of your babies up or down the stairs at the same time. One book even said you shouldn't ever even carry them at the same time.

What do you think? What do you do?

    Thanks for your input!

I voted n/a because we don't have stairs -- but of course we do still encounter stairs in various places, and I never carry them both at the same time. It is just too dangerous. You need to have a hand free to catch yourself if you lose your balance (which is not hard to do when you're holding a squirming child).

I also rarely carried them at the same time (period) when they were small -- I just felt like I couldn't keep a good firm grip on both of them. Granted, our house is small and I am not the primary caretaker, so it wasn't a big deal. I do carry them at the same time now (occasionally), but I didn't start doing it until they were at least a year old and could hold onto me like little monkeys -- plus they could land on their feet if I had to set one down really suddenly.

We have a flight of 18 stairs and I do carry them both up and down. Funny you should mention this, because about 2 weeks ago I did fall down 3 of the steps while holding Emma and my 3 year old. Thank goodness, the only one who really got hurt was me!! I am much more careful now and don't grab the 35lb 3 year old when I am carrying a baby(duh!).

Mine arent huge.. yet. But I carry them at the same time ALL the time. I can even carry both in my left arm in a pinch if I have to grab something with my right. They will soon be to big for this... but I dont know how I will do everything without being able to grab them at the same time. I change them on the bed so I think it is way more dangerous to leave one laying while I pack the other one outta the room, so I just grab both.

The people who write 'never carry your babies up and down the stairs' never had multiples! Or a house with three flights of stairs.

I carry them both all the time. I need to stop though because they are over 40 pounds together and getting super wiggly so those days are coming to an end!

Nope never carry them both up or down the stairs together. 1. I dont think it is safe b/c they move so much that they are likely to knock you off balance 2. I have horrible skull, back and neck problems and my doctors would probably KILL me if they ever knew that I did!

Man, I must be a total wuss! I have NEVER carried both babies at the same time. Watching me try to walk ten feet carrying them both in their carseats is quite a hoot as well. When am I gonna get some muscles?!?! I too would be scared of doing this on the stairs anyways, but our staircase is really funky, so that's part of the reason.

I always carry them at the same time. I never fell with them.... I fell when I was going down the stairs ALONE.

Heh. :) We lived in a house with stairs for about 4-5 months after the girls were born. For the first two months I was anemic and just plain weak. I'd "carry" them one at a time down the stairs, by sitting on my rear and scooting down the stairs. No wonder the cats were looking at me funny.

I am more likely to trip while going UP the stairs also ALONE

I voted n/a because we don't have stairs, but I wouldn't carry them both down stairs anyway - seems to dangerous! I do carry them both at the same time (from bedroom to living room after naps) but I'm also prepared to set them down if they are too wiggly.

I always carry them both together because if i dont the one left down stairs just causes mischief. I have to say though i have to carry them like rugby balls (under my arms) because its to hard to carry them the other way! x

I'd say your books were not written by someone with actual twin experience. I've lugged both of mine up and down the stairs more times than I can count and carried them both frequently until they learned to walk. Nobody has ever been dropped. And I'm also more likely to trip when it's just me because I'm not being as careful.

I've done it once or twice, but it just doesn't feel safe to me. DH does it though.

I put occasionally, but I've really only carried them down the stairs after they've woken up in the AM once or twice. They are so squirmy now, that I do one at a time, and put the first one in the PNP to go get the other. I don't think I'd trust myself, just as some other PP have said, I also trip just on my own so don't want to risk it anymore.

I call the rugby carry the airplane carry. I like it a lot because it is easier. When you carry them sitting on your hips they grap things and lean backwards and that affects your balance.

I don't because I'm too nervous. Maybe when they're older? I'm not sure. Also, my guys are heavy at 17 and 18 lbs - it's hard for me to carry them both to the car in their seats!
