My girlies are really starting to get on the move and can climb up a few steps. So today I went to Wal-mart to get a gate to keep them off. The one I bought did not work. I searched older threads and no luck finding any info.

I need a gate to go across the bottom of our stairs. Problem is it has a platform under the railings on the banister that is wider. So the pressure one that I bought did not work because the bottom and the top of the banister are 2 different widths. Does that make sense?

I would like to stay away from drilling into the banister and I would like one that opens and doesn't cost an arm and a leg(I know I'm wanting a lot :D )
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks in advance!!

Same problem here... plus our banister is iron and we just can't attach anything to it!

We have the same problem in our home. Our bannisters are iron and we could not attach any gates to it. The way our house is set up we can take a superyard and extend it to block off the steps completely. We just extend it from behind the couch to the dining room wall. We also have had to put an end table in front of it to discourage the little ones from trying to slide the gate out of the way. Not sure if that will help you, I'm not sure how your home is set up but that was the best idea we came up with. Good luck!

Yeah we're thinking of using a superyard, or somehow attach a long gate around the stairs and the front door... not sure how though :(

Thanks!! I will have to try the superyard. We have one and the girls hardly ever use it anymore. They cry when you put them in it.
    Any other suggestions????

I have this gate. You can adjust the top and bottom to fit. We have baseboards so a standard pressure gate doesn't work.

Thanks so much I will be going to see if they have one today!!

We have a gate like this gate both at the top and the bottom of the stairs. I think we actually had to buy one with more extensions because we have a wider that normal staircase. Both have basboards/moulding such that one part of one side either top or bottom is an inch or so narrower/wider than it's counterpart on the same side. Still works great. It's super tall, too, so even the little climbing monkeys can't get over it yet. My only complaint is the width of the door. It's a standard size gate (nice sized), but not the full stairway width like some I have seen. Not super complicated to open (slide latch and pull up) although lots of adults have been stumped by it for long enough to call for help, too. :) Even if the kids figure out the mechanism it's too tall and heavy for them to operate though DH and I can both easily get it one handed even while carrying both of the monkeys.

And something to think about for an iron banister - they make gate mounting kits that have a piece of wood that velcros or attach with plastic to the banister that you can use. Our friends have them and swear by them with the same gate we have. Is still pretty secure on their wrap around base at the foot of their stairs with the iron banisters.
