Safe Play Area

As the babies get more and more mobile with each passing week, I am wondering how I should keep them "contained." I want to have a safe play/rest area for them, but don't know what my options are. Have any of you used the Kidco Playden? What about other "play yards"? Someone suggested to me that I just clear everything out of one room of the house, and then let them loose (after covering up the outlets, of course). However, my house is very small, and I don't know how practical that would be. If you do use play yards, do you use two separate ones? Any other suggestions?

We have a North States superyard with an extension and it is awesome. We live in a small apartment so we don't have enough space to give them a play room (that would be great though). We have hardwood floors so we bought some foam tiles and then put the superyard on top. It works great for us and i'd highly recommend it!

If I really needed to get something done, I put them in the SuperYard: Gate. I had the foam letter mat on the floor underneath them. Once they were mobile-I took down the play yard and gave them free roam of the first floor.

We did buy a gate that extended that blocked off the living room from the rest of the house. That came in handy-if I needed to shower, etc I could put a video on and quickly shower or do a load of laundry, etc.

We have two superyards. We just used the sections and put around things like bookshelves, entertainment center. They get full run of our main two rooms but can't get to anything. Of course, now they climb so it is all for naught.

We have a superyard with the foam play mat under it as well. I did give up my dining room for a "baby" room. I have tucked in one corner my desk and computer adn the rest of the room is toys, PNP, changing table, the superyard, high chairs, laundry LOL

We also setup a super play yard w/ extension once the boys started crawling. We have the Summer Infant Secure Surround play yard setup between our kitchen and living room, which is open to each other. We reinforced our playard with some thin strips of wood because it just didn't seem very sturdy. Once they got really mobile though they didn't like being contained in such a small area, so we baby proofed the living room and kitchen with outlet covers and put up 2 metal walk-thru pressure mounted gates to the openings in those rooms. Now they pretty much room around the living room and kitchen, though if we need to leave them unattended for 5 minutes or so we will close them up in Baby Alcatraz briefly :)
