Is there a safe for pregnancy heartburn medication I can take? Like tums or maalox? I only get it once in a while, usually when I overdue the citrus or chocolate food groups (LOL), but I get it bad. Feels like it is in my chest and crawling slowly up my back! Not sure what to do about it. Thanks everyone!!

    Hi,

Tums are safe. I have been taking them since the beginning. A few weeks ago they started to not be as effective, so the doctor prescribed Zantac. I hope that helps.

Tums are safe and I was also able to take the over the counter Zantac. I normally take prilosec for heartburn every day, but they had me stop taking that when pregnant.

I'm another one that lived on Tums towards the end. They helped! Good luck.

    Tums work well for me.

Another thing that works though it sounds nasty is 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and then sip water. My friend who is a natural nutritionist told me about it. It sounds counterintuitive but it really works and is all natural.

Like the previous posts said Tums are safe and I used Zantac. I am now on prescription because nothing works. The vinegar trick is a little gross and burns but, it does work. I do that if my meds have not kicked in yet. At this point it takes the edge off so I can function. Before it worked completely.

Gaviscon is amazing. Just mentioned I was getting heart burn / acid reflux to the midwife and the next thing I had a subscription in my hand :) Works a treat! (not sure if you have it in the US though!!)

I take Zantac religiously. Wouldn't be able to function without it. Nothing else got the job done.

Also really good for digestion/heartburn - almonds, papaya, and bananas. I almost always include almonds in my snacks...for the heartburn issues and for the great source of protein.

I also have been using Zantac lately which helps, but mostly I have relegated myself to the idea that there are just some things that don't agree with me anymore (sadly). I'm so missing Mexican food these days, as well as other things too.

I lived on tums and to some degree still do. Sadly, my heartburn turned into awful acid reflux that made it hard to keep food down so I am now on prescription Prevacid which works amazingly well!!

Alaskangirls - I was told to avoid papaya during pregnancy? I'm guessing you haven't had any issues?

I have been using Tums during my first pregnancy, but this time I try to stay away from it.. I've heard more than once that Antacids During Pregnancy Up Risk for Child's Asthma. especially if it is prescription antacids. Here is one of the articles :http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2008/12.18/11-antacid.html

I drink milk when I have heartburn. It really helps.

I took tums for awhile, until those stopped working, and I was going through a bottle like water. The doc then told me to try the Zantac (take the low does one...I think its Zantac 75, instead of the 150). It worked WONDERS.

I buy the generic tums. I love the chalky taste of the antacids (weird I know). They work well and I eat them everyday since the third trimester. Hopefully, I haven't harmed anyone.
