I hardly ever get annoyed with people's comments, as I figure most people are just naturally curious. I've been fortunate since in my experience people have been friendly and kind. However, there is one thing that is starting to irritate me. I've recently had people actually argue with me over whether or not my girls are identical or fraternal ! I think I would know, I AM their mother! Here is a typical conversation:

    Stranger: Oh twins!

    Me: Yep!

    Stranger: Two girls?

    Me: Uh-huh.

    Stranger: Identical?

    Me: No, actually they're fraternal.

Stranger: But they look SO much alike! They have the same eye/hair color (which they actually don't) and their heads are even tilted the same way. They look just alike!

    Me: Nope, they're fraternal.

Stranger: Really? I could swear they're identical!

Anyway, this could go on and on, but I usually can end it by informing them that they have different blood types so there is NO way they are identical. I suppose they must look a little alike since I get this frequently, but they look SO different to me. The identical mistake really wouldn't bother me at all in and of itself, it is just when people want to argue with me <_<!

Okay, that's my vent  !

Its funny how so many people are SO interested on if they are ID/frat.

Although I WAS talking to a woman who's twins looked SO much alike and she said they were frat because they didnt share anything in the womb and the Dr told her they were most likely frats  .. I told her to get them tested. :D

I'm right there with you! I don't know how many times I've heard that my boys MUST be identical. Really, if you looked at them apart from one another, you wouldn't be able to even pick them as brothers, let alone twins!!

I took my boys to JCpenneys for 3-month pictures today, and the photographer insisted that they were at least 'nearly identical.' She said that their noses were exactly the same... but AJ has a broad, snub nose, and Benny has a pert, narrow, upturned nose... NOTHING alike!! They also have different sizes, builds, head shapes, hair, skin, eye shape, mouth shape, etc. They both have blue eyes - but one is dark blue and the other is light. They both have brownish hair, but one is thick and stick-straight, the other fine and fuzzy. They are both boys. They are both babies. But that's about it!! (Good heavens, even their peeps are totally different-looking! ) Trust me folks, I've seen enough of my kids to know for a fact that they are not identical!!!

I had the same experience - I told a woman we didn't know, and she tried to tell me mine were definitly frats (which I do believe they are) since they shared nothing in the womb. I told her 25-33% of twins that share nothing are ID and she went white and told me she has 22 YO b/b twins she can't tell apart to this day. I said "If YOU can't tell them apart, they are id!"

Still blows my mind how someone can know SOOOO little about their own medical situation!

I've had that SAME conversatino about my twins before. People ask me if one has short hair and one has long hair so *WE* can tell them apart!!!!! OMG!!! Drives me nuts! I have to go into the whole "different blood type" thing too sometimes b/c some pepole are just so insistent that they are ID.

I was at the park with them the other day and had been chatting to this mom for quite awhile. We were talking about kids, gaining weight with pregnancies, etc. I even said (pointing to the twins) "with them I gained 65 lbs and with her (pointing to Livi) I gained 40 lbs.). Ok, wouldn't you assume 2 pregnancies, NOT 3? Well, 20 mintues later, she's like, "How far apart are your girls in age (referring to the twins)? She had been SO nice to me, that I didn't want to make her feel bad and say "1 minute" So, I'm like, "These two? They are twins...they were born 1 minute apart." She was stunned...lol. She's like, "Wow, one's taller than the other!" UM...DUH...that can happen! I was just laughing b/c they had one identical pair of pants, identical jackets and coordinating tops!

i've had people argue with me that my twins could be indentical......they are b/g twins!! Some people still swear they heard somewhere that it was possible to have identical boy/girl twins...I Just smile and laugh inside :rotflmbo:

I always thought your girls were ID, are you sure???? LOL just kidding. I think they look alot alike though. It is so annoying when people think they know more than you about your own kids!!

the national geographic "inside the womb: multiples" that aired last year talks about the VERY rare instance in which b/g twins can be identical, something about a dropped y gene--it made sense when they said it, but i can't explain it myself

anyway, i get a reference to that all the time, too, despite the fact that my 2 are so different

I have boy/ girl twins; the girl is a pound lighter than the boy and the boy has a much bigger head than the girl, and a lot of hair whereas the girl has no hair right now... I still get asked if they are identical!!! I sure hope not!!!!

I think it boils down to people like to be right LOL

I am amazed that it does seem to be what people want to know when they see twins.

hahaha, thats so funny! I get that too and my dont even look like sisters never mind being identical!

And I actually got my first 'better you than me' comment at the grocery store on Sat! I was with my mother and she jumped all over the guy about how awesome my girls are!
But I also got a mom of 12yr old twins stop me and tell me how WONDERFUL it is to have twins (and that she couldnt believe she was now the one stopping new twin moms) and to treasure it!

Yesterday in the grocery store a woman took a look at my girls in their stroller (one was in mint green and the other in light pink) asked me if I had two boys. I said no, two girls. She then proceeded to look closely at my girls and turned to me and said 'really? that one sure looks like a boy'.

Um yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm able to tell that she's a girl not a boy. It was hilarious. The woman looked like she absolutely wanted to argue with me.

On that show "In The Womb-Multiples" they say it IS possible to have b/g monozygotic twins. That if you happened to have fertilized an XX egg with a Y ... the baby would be XXY and if it split then you would have an XX and XY monoqygotic twins. My sister had a stillborn baby that was XXX. She had 3 sets of chromosomes instead of 2 so I know that can happen. If her egg had split, she may have had healthy twins as opposed to one sick little girl =( =(

I guess you wouldn't term it "identical" but "monozygotic" instead.

I get this one alllll the time, when people ask me if they are identical (even though I just said they were b/g) I just smile no they are fraternal. they will then say, but they look alike (which they don't)

Like you, I just smile and politely correct them. That's all you can really do in these situations :D

LOL!! I have had the same conversation several times, almost word for word, even with family. I have Aunts and Uncles who still can't tell them apart. Jeez...lets see...one has bright red hair and the other dark black hair. How would I EXPECT you to tell them apart? And people still ask if they are identical even after commenting how one looks like me and the other my husband.

It annoys me to no end.

I agree with pp, I get asked that all the time. Mine look NOTHING alike and people still say, they look identical to each other...I like Shelly's answer...not below the waist they aren't.

I guess if you looked very quickly you would think they were alot alike but if you look at them for more than 10 seconds you can see their differences.

Sorry for that lady's comments...what a pain to deal with ignorant people

I think you're girls look a lot alike when I first see them, but a few mins later I can see the differences. Most people have the same experience with my boys. I ALWAYS get the ladies with too much time on their hands that argue with me if they are identical or not! I wish I could say they had different blood types to shut them up! Sorry it's getting on your nerves so much!

My boy is 3 pounds bigger than my girl and has a full head of hair while she is bald. Plus, they are b/g twins! When people ask me if they are identical, I say yes, except for the penis. I'm not very nice though. :)

I think it does boil down to people either
    a) wanting/needing to be right, or
    B) wanting to have a conversation because they're fascinated by the twin thing.

We STILL get the 'are they boys' question - even when they have PINK BARRETTES in their hair!

and - mine are identical but don't look it and people constantly ask how we tell them apart. Um, because they LOOK different???

I gave up explaining that ID twins were a random split and now just say "yes' when people ask if twins run in the family. Honestly, i don't have time to play catch-up high school science teacher with complete strangers.......(ooh, don't i sound snarky!)
