I am not sure if this is the right area to post this or not so if not please let me know. My girls just turned 3 and are potty trained during the day. I wipe them and most of the time I use flushable wipes and occasionally toilet paper. I always wipe front to back (they bend over). We do baths about every 2-3 days in the winter as they really aren't dirty and more causes their skin to dry out. Anyway, it seems that they start to stink down there and are also getting red. Also, at bathtime they say a wash cloth hurts to be washed with so I just use my hand and they don't like that either. Tonight after bath I had them go pee and they both complained their bottoms hurt. When they were done they pointed to their privates and sure enough they were red again. I used either cornstarch to help or A&D ointment when this happens. Anyone else have issues like this? How do I keep them from smelling, getting them clean and what about the redness? Any answers are appreciated!

    Thanks!

Any time my girls poop (even now), we use wipes. It's just easier to get them clean and keeps them from getting too red. My girls are very sensitive, so I just keep the wipes handy and they are so much better to use then toilet paper. For regular pee, toilet paper is all they use. I keep a big tub of aquaphor in the bathroom and we use it quite regularly. My girls still complain from time to time of hurting and get red and irritated. I honestly think that sometimes they itch or get irritated and they just wait and wait to tell me until they have irritated themselves even worse, so i just keep the aquaphor handy to put on them. It instantly takes care of the problem. It's like the creme of the gods at our house :D At your girls' age, I wiped my girls the majority of the time when they pooped. It wasn't until right before they started preschool that we really started focusing on them wiping themselves and doing a good job. Even now, I will wipe them down from time to time just to make sure they have done a good job, or we'll even go back through and I'll watch them and make sure they are wiping correctly. They need to be reminded to keep wiping from front to back from time to time.

We have to use corn starch or some A&D ointment from time to time. My DD is bad about going and not telling me. I usually find the 'evidence' in her little potty. She is not great about the wiping thing yet. So, that leads to the redness and irritation, etc...on occassion. I would suggest on the non-bath days to at least do some peri care....just wipe them off with a wet washcloth or wipies. AND...Maybe use some vaseline in the peri area as a skin protectant.

We wiped their bottoms with a baby wipe and Cetaphil lotion every morning and night (when changing clothes) until they were at least 5. (We still do it if they haven't had a bath in a couple of days.) It keeps their bottoms from getting smelly and irritated. We still have issues when they don't wipe after they pee, and Sarah often asks me to wipe her poop for her too. But at school, at least, they manage OK.
