So - Natalie was diagnosed with RSV on Monday evening. I took her to the ER due to high fever and they did a culture - had to stick this long tube thing up her nose - gosh - she screamed! Anyway - I got all the info and feel very well informed on how to deal with fever - and other symptoms etc. for this. The Moms who's children have had this - does the other twin automatically get it? What was some things that worked best for you to either avoid this, or just some tips on how to make them feel better, get over it quick etc.? TIA!
we just got over rsv on this end but since mine where so little they spent a little time in the hostipal. both where test for rsv and only one was positive! they where both very sick but the other was dx with uri. :hug99: good luck hope shr starts to feel better cuz there is not much you can do for it!
Both my girls have RSV right now. One developed pneumonia and the other bronchiolitis. There isn't/wasn't much we can do, other than supportive care - the girls are on antibiotics (for ear infections as well) and 3x/daily nebulizer treatments. After a few days of that the threat of hospitalization was gone...but they are still on teh neb treatments for another 1.5weeks or so. For a few days, I thought our ped was going to send us to Children's . Thankfully we avoided that! Anyway, the best thing you can do is keep their noses clear, keep the air warm & moist to help w/breathing, and keep up the fluids. Other than that, they ahve to work it out on their own
Both of my girls had it in early January. Since they share everything - pacifiers, toys, ect. - I suppose it's natural to share illnesses too! My older DD also had it when she was little so I started doing all of the same things. I had albuterol and a nebulizer so I started breathing treatments on them 1-2x a day - usually 1 before bedtime so they would sleep better. I kept them on Tylenol or Motrin for the fever and I figured they felt crappy too. We also ran a humidifier in their room. I also pushed fluids - water and juice for between meals since milk can increase mucus. Since they weren't eating well either, I made sure to give them bottles before attempting solids, again for the fluids. Basically that's all we could do. My girls did end up in the doctor's office several weeks after they first got the symptoms because they were screaming during the night which they never do - ear infections of course. The doctor confirmed they were getting over RSV and gave me some more samples of albuterol. She also said there wasn't anything else we could have done. Hugs to you! When they are both sick is the only time that I really consider twins hard since they both want Mommy! Hope they feel better soon!

The Dr. says that there is no antibiotic etc. for it - but I can hear her getting weezy etc. and would like to help her feel better etc. Also - how about baths? I gave Nat a tepid bath when she had a fever, but I don't want to "chill" them etc. I run a vaporizor in the room at night - Natalie hasn't been interested in too much in the way of food. I have been offering her pedialyte - but it seems she prefers water. Thanks for any info.
Did your doc prescribe breathing treatments for the wheezing? Both my girls got RSV in December and were on breathing treatments every 4-6 hours round the clock. Ditto everything that everyone told you.
4/5 of my kids had it. Jake and Emma both had it, but Jacob was the worst of the two. Push the fluids. They feel so icky that they don't want to drink, and can dehydrate so quickly. Popcicles are a good and "fun" way of getting fluid in them. I made some out of Pedialyte, but you can buy them also. Water is fine too. Saline in the nose to help them breathe. Cool mist humidifier. Albuterol is an Rx. It's in liquid syrup or nebulizer form. All of my kids were on the nebulizer except for Emma when they had it. If she is wheezing, I would take her back in and have the docs listen, to see if she may need a treatment. Baths are a good way to bring down the fever. I hope they are feeling better soon. :hug99:
Albuterol is a RX, but my doctor gave me 3 sample boxes since I have a nebulizer to do breathing treatments. You might ask your doctor for some samples to try, however I'm guessing you don't have a nebulizer. Some insurance plans will pay for them and the doctor loans them out. I think our insurance required it to be bought through a certain place and they would deliver it. If I remember correctly though, we bought ours at Walgreens since it was going to cost us the same amount. They are pricey though. My ped did say though that not all docs still do breathing treatments for RSV.
Just be prepared that RSV can last a long time in babies. My first son had it at 6 months. He was sick for about 6 weeks. It was hard. We did breathing treatments that entire time, and he actually ended up with asthma as a result of it. He has now outgrown that, and thankfully, this winter (finally!) we haven't had to do any breathing treatments. We did them daily for about 2 1/2 years. Hang in there. It's so hard to have a sick baby. Our twins have been fairly healthy other than ear infections (no big deal). I hope they get better soon. I would certainly ask about the neb treatments. Ask for Xeponex instead of straight Albuterol. It has fewer side effects. I would certainly try to avoid liquid Albuterol. I would also ask about maybe using Pulmicort in a nebulizer, too, if they don't get better. That's an inhaled steroid.
