so my dd is rolling all over the place and working on sitting-she does really well w/a boppy behind her.
However, ds is not really rolling yet. He has done it before but its definately not consistant. I try to give him lots of tummy time but he can only stand maybe 5 minutes at a time before he starts fussing/crying. Also he just doesnt lift his head and shoulders up very well. This may sound wierd but he has a bigger head...could this be hindering him?
So...do I let him fuss cry for a while on his belly?
Should I be worried about this?

I wouldnt worry at this point. One of mine rolled at 4 months, the other at 6 months. It took them awhile to get consistent at it.

My youngest is the laziest baby. He loved tummy time. He would just lay his head down and rest!

It is hard not to compare your two babies. Especially since they are in the same house! Yes, let him fuss a little bit on his tummy. Tummy time is very important. Evan didn't start rolling consistantly here until about 9 months old! It was like he says, I've done that, that is old news.
 You should be having a well visit with the doctor at 6 months. Perhaps talk to him/her about it then.

Have you tried TT on a boppy pillow with some toys around him. That might encourage him to lift his head more (since its already a little elevated). I agree with Jackie and Rachel that every baby is different so if you pedi isn't concerned then I wouldn't be either.

Does your DS have tummy troubles like reflux or anything? My DD is that way, tummy troubles and large head so she has been behind DS with all the tummy stuff. Her OT is ok with all her progress. She will routinely roll from her tummy to her back, but has yet to roll from her back to tummy. She sits well, but it took her longer to do that than her brother. They are almost 7 months adjusted.

My DS has a big head, too. He does the same as pp said - puts his head down to rest every few minutes. He rolled before DD, but didn't seem too crazy about it. He'll roll once in a while, but she rolls all over. He's more of a belly scooter. Maybe the big heads make it harder, who knows? He loves tummy time, though, and scoots his way all over the place. He just takes a quick rest here and there along the way. Try not to worry - he'll get there!

Sitting was harder for DS, too, but once he figured out how to balance that big noggin, he became more stable than DD! She still takes a tumble once in a while, but he's so sturdy now!

I would try not to worry about it. I know it's so hard not to compare your babies. He will roll in his own time! I think that if you want to give him some extra tummy time that would be okay too.

Some kids are just lazy, like my dd likes her stomach so she rolls more. He will get there, I'm sure mine will.

My DD has mastered motor skills before our DS, so she was rolling before him. It's hard to not compare babies. DS hated being on his belly for a while there but then he started to get it. If you are concerned, I would definitely mention it to your pediatrician!

    Hi,
we are about the same here. My DD is able to mostly sit with support. She rolled over sooner and scoots backwards now. My DS weighs 5 more pounds than his sister (he is about 21 pounds), and has a big head. He would get frustrated with tummy time after a few minutes or so and lay his head on the ground. Our pediatrician said his weight would make it harder for him to lift his head.
Just this week (6 months, 2 weeks) he started rolling a lot. He will roll from stomach to back, then back to stomach multiple times in a row. He uses a different technique than his sister, but he seems happy to be rolling along. You can check with your pedi, but it sounds fine to me.
He was more interested in tummy time when I got down on the floor with him, or put his sister right next to him. Sometimes I could tempt the cat to walk by a few times. He does better with live entertainment!

 It is so hard not to compare them when you have both right in front of you. My son has a bigger head too. What worked best for him during TT was to put the boppy under his armpits so that it gave him more leverage and he wasn't staring at the floor. :good: My dd didn't roll until 8 months  and I even took her for a physical therapy evaluation and they told us not to worry since she was doing other things. She just wasn't a big roller. :pardon:

My babies are about 4.5 months old and my ds is holding his head up great and rolls over with no problems. He is even the on with the bigger head. My dd has no interest in tummy time, lifting her head, or attempting to roll. As soon as she gets on her tummy, she fusses and just hates it. She has no problem holding her head up and has great control when she's sitting up, but just hates being on her tummy. My pedi said you can't make a baby like being on her stomach and that she has great neck muscles, so not to worry about it.

Katie really enjoyed tummy time more with a boppy pillow under her. Have you tried that?

I agree with PP, I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Thanks ladies! We have tried the boppy thing but not for a while...I'm going to start doing that again. And I agree with pp when I get down there or put his sister down there too he can do better. We took him to the pedi because he was very fussy (teething) while there we asked about rolling and her ds had to have pt so she gave us a few ideas. She said if he isnt rolling by 7 months she might reccomend an evaluation just to see.
