DD (3.5 months corrected age) has learned to roll from her back to her tummy, and she does it all the time now. I just found her sleeping on her tummy in her crib. Of course, I rolled her over onto her back - only for her to roll right back onto her tummy again!

Finally, after feeding her, I've got her sleeping on her back again.

But now I am scared to death of SIDS. What if she keeps doing this while I'm asleep?

(She can roll from tummy to back, but it's a lot harder for her, & she's only done it a few times.)

Although I don't think there is any hard research info on this, it is generally believed that once they are strong enough to roll over then they also have the ability to reposition in order to breath should the need arise. Of course, you should continue with the normal precautions no blankets, stuffed animals etc etc. Once they learned to roll I did have a short period where I rolled them back but not because of concern for SIDS but because they were angry they couldn't roll back. Once they could roll both ways I didn't have to do that anymore and they slept however they were comfortable.

My Dr told me with DD#1 that once they roll over the risk of SIDS drops dramatically since they are able to protect their necks better. He said to keep putting her to sleep on her back but if she rolls to not worry. He also said that the reason they give for 6 months being when SIDS drops is because most babys can roll over by then.
It's not not to worry though.

You can't "make" a baby sleep on her back. All you can do is put her down that way. With my first, I would go in and try the baby flip. It was comical! My baby would already be trying to turn back onto the belly WHILE SLEEPING. Some people (and babies) just don't like to sleep on their backs.

I posted this exact post a few weeks ago! Mine are six months old, and they love sleeping on their tummies. I still roll them over on their backs again every time I catch them, I even get freaked out in the middle of the night and go check. At least Sarah turns her head to the side and sucks her thumb, so I know she can breathe, unfortunately I have caught Cate several times with her face down in the mattress. I am planning to ask my pedi about it at their 6 month next week. Will post what I find out. mine are still not very good at rolling back onto their backs, so I am uneasy. That said, my mother said when I was little, all babies slept on their stomachs.

Me too! I didn't put them on their bellies to sleep; however, I didn't worry if they rolled themselves onto their bellies. I also thought that as long as I did as much as possible to keep them safe then the rest was up to God. Try not to worry too much!

Yes, exactly! Once they can roll, it's pretty safe to let them sleep on their tummy as long as you continue to follow the normal precautions.

We have the same issue since they can roll over they do. We go and put them to sleep on their tummies and my DS will instantly roll to his tummy. We were told that if they can roll over by themselves than they are ok to sleep on their tummies. We do try to roll them back but it is honestly a lost lost lost cause because in the blink of an eye they are back on their tummies. We have checked them numerous times during the nite when they started this (and still check) and they are always ok and sound asleep and seem to sleep a lot better now that they do it on their tummies.
