Ripping off their velcro bibs during mealtime

We have the bumkins plastic bibs which have been fabulous for us. They catch a lot of food, I can throw them in the wash and they have been really durable.

Problem is that they have velcro closures and DS thinks it's hilarious to rip it off during mealtime. I don't think it's hilarious. Now, eating is nothing but me saying "NO touch!" and he laughs at me and rips it off.

I really like these bibs and have 8 of them - so a bit of an investment to throw them out.

    Ideas?

Suggest u get ones you can "tie" or with press studs, and then gradually introduce the velcro ones back in a couple of months, when they have hopefully forgot they can pull them off

Or how about a safety pin through the velcro if u don't want to buy new ones

    good luck

This was a short phase for mine. They occasionally still do it, but it is usually when she's just done eating and wants it off.

We got the Bumkins long sleeve bibs that have a tie closure. I got them on Ebay (I think I paid $16 for 7, and liked them so much I bought another 7 from the same buyer). After a year they still have a hard time getting them off, and I like that the sleeves on the bibs protect the sleeves on their clothes. I actually cut the sleeves on some of them (into short sleeves) because they were a little hot for the summer (and the Bumkins bibs that come with short sleeves all have the velcro that I didn't want)

It is more money, but they'll hopefully last you as long as you need bibs.

Safety pinning through the velcro works well. Sometimes I forget to do it, sometimes he doesn't try to take off his bib, but the times he tries to and he can't, you should see the look on his face. ;)

We went through this, too. When I tried the safety pin, DS would throw a fit that he couldn't get it off. Between taking the bib off and the tantrums, I was dreading mealtimes. So, I decided to "choose my battles" and gave up on the bibs. If they are wearing something I don't want them to get messy, I change their shirts before a meal. If not, I rinse out the shirt after the meal, as I would the bib. The bonus is that when they get yogurt or applesauce or something else wet on their shirts, they feel it now... so they are teaching themselves to be neater eaters. DD will still wear hers. In fact, she asks for. Go figure! :)

We usually don't use bibs. If it's something extra messy I have some cheap bib I got at Target that have ties instead of velcro. That works pretty well for us. And if it turns into a huge fight I just take their shirts off and let them eat naked.

Oh, I got him with the safety pin. DH said that he thought it was sad that I'd get SO much pleasure out of laughing at a 1 year old. :rotflmbo:

The look on his face while pulling was priceless! :rotflmbo:

The look on his face after he realized it wasn't coming off was priceless! :rotflmbo:

This was a phase for mine too! It ended in just a few days. They occasionaly pull them off but not often. Can you safety pin them until then? Good Luck

You can buy snaps at walmart. They are easy to install, just need a hammer & done. I have also used the famous duct tape, but it leaves glue on the plastic.

One of my kids went through the same thing when he was about the same age. That phase ended really quick (about 3 days) because I took away his food as soon as he took off his bib and explained that he must wear a bib if he wants to eat. He cried and cried but I was very firm. I didn't bring his food back until he kept his bib on. He got the message really quick and even started to remind me to put on his bib whenever I forgot it. LOL!
