My ds has mild reflux and as per doc's orders I need to add 4 teaspoons of rice cereal to his hypoallergenic formula.

I use Dr. Browns, and with 4 teaspoons the level 2 doesn't work (it goes very slow with 2 teaspoons, about 40 minutes for 4 oz). I still had some Avent triple flow nipples, but then he finishes the bottle in 3-4 minutes and screams bloody murder since he doesn't want to be burped and doesn't realize he already finished the entire bottle (and he spit up because of all this).

I plan to get some Level 3 nipples and maybe the Y-cut and try that, but I was wondering what has worked best in terms of adding 1 teaspoon of rice cereal to 1 oz of formula without taking forever or finishing the bottle way too quickly.

I currently put 4tsp. of rice cereal in a 5oz. bottle. We use fast flow nipples and have had no problems at all.

With the thick rice cereal bottles we use Avent Variables Nipples. There are different flows in the same nipple and if it goes to slow you just rotate it around. It has worked great for us.

Using that amount of cereal, with the Dr. Brown's bottles, I would use a size 3. Y-cut would probably be too fast.

We use 1/2 tsp. of cereal to each oz. of formula and use Evenflo Comfi Curve bottles with (BRU brand) Especially for Baby med. flow nipples. The Playtex nurser silicone fast flow works good, too.

We use Dr. Brown's and I could never get the flow right using any of the nipples/cutting/toothpicking. We switched to Enfamil AR with the level one nipples and it is perfect.

With Dr Browns Bottles we also had a hard time getting the right flow/nipple. We used the Y cut but sometime it would just go to fast and they seemed to rip easily after a few uses. We used # 3's but it was still too slow so I had to make the nipple bigger with a needle but also they kept ripping, Finally we switched to Avent Bottles and bought the Variable Flow Nipples and loved them! Like the PP said 1 nipple has 3 diff flows depending on how you turn it. So if it seems to be coming out too fast or slow you just turn the bottle w/o getting them aggravated. Just this week we stopped the cereal and had to go to Avent #4 nipples b/c my guys are aggressive eaters and get frustrated if it's not fast enough. It feels funny not doing all the mixing, stirring, etc All I do now is pour RTF formula in a bottle, imagine [IMG]

    Thanks everybody!

I've used that Avent nipple, but I find it very fast, even the slowest grade. I bought some Level 3 and Y nipples at BRU this morning and the level 3 is working OK, but still a little slow. I may try the Y later today. It seems hard getting the right flow.

After about 4 months of fighting to find the right nipple just for the cereal bottles, we finally found that the normal cheapy type bottles worked with the Walmart Parents Choice Brand Fast Nipples. They come 6 in a pack so that's kinda nice. They also have these neat little air things on the bottom that let the air out too. They work great. WE have been putting an tsp per ounce as well. Good Luck.
