My son was given zantac at his 1 month appt (they were born 3/15/07) for reflux. He was doing great on it until yesterday, and since his 11am feed he has been having large "wet burps" with almost each feed. It's not the projectile it was before but it's not just a little spit up either. Has anyone had this happen while being on meds? Do they change the medication? He doesnt grimace when it happens and will take the remainder of his bottle and doesnt throw up any more of it. They are currently getting bottles with 1/2 EBM and 1/2 Enfamil Enfacare, and have been getting this combo since birth. Any ideas? TIA!

All my boys had reflux and always spit up!!!

The twins are on prevacid and reglan and still spit up lots (about 2 oz) every feed.
The meds mainly prevent them from hurting so much.

Maybe ask for reglan as it empties the stomach faster, if he keeps spitting up a lot.

As long as they are gaining weight and are not in pain they'll be fine. :D

My daughter had bad reflux just like you are explaining. She was on Enfamil Lipil, then the pedi perscribed zantc and switched to Enfamil Gentlease, but she was still spitting up. So we then tried Enfamil AR (acid reflux) it's a thicker formula, well lets say that made it worse for her, I don't know why. It's a formula that is thicker to help keep it down. So we went back to the Gentlease.
We also gave Mycolyn drops, that seemed to help a bit, it's for gas.

She is now 9mo. and is not spitting up at all. She stopped the spitting up around 7mo. When they start getting to the cereal and solids it starts to go away. So stick with it! Same as PP, if they are gainning weight they are fine!! Just have those many burp rags ready!

The Zantac won't help with actually lessening the amount of spit-up, it will help with the pain caused by the spitting up. You may ask the ped if you can add a little cereal to the bottle to help weigh the formula down, and lessen the spit ups. :hug99: Reflux stinks.

What bottles are you using? I actually had the most success by changing bottle brands. I am exclusively using Born Free.

My Emily was a really bed reflux/spit-up kid until she was around 1 year. There did finally come a point where I began to use cereal in the bottle. I hesitated due to fear of the unknown and the fact that mine were 30 weekers, etc, but the zantac was great for the pain associated with the reflux. Zantac isn't designed to reduce spit up...it only alleviates (or should alleviate) the pain and burning associated with the stuff coming back up. The spit up is something that they eventually outgrow. Invest in bibs. Emily worn one pretty much all day long so that I could just change bibs and not clothes. I would feed, burp, and sit her in her bouncy seat OR swing (on the ultra slow setting) for about 1 hour and then would let her lie on the floor and stretch out, but even after all this she would probably still spit up a bit. After the breast milk or formula has been in their system long enough, their body has extracted the nutrients it needs, so by this time, spitting up isn't as big a deal as spitting up 5 minutes after they eat. I use to really freak out about it, but then I realized, the child is not in pain and is thriving so it's nothing more than the inconvenience of the cleaning involved. It was a small price to pay for that little bitty baby who just had her 2nd birthday and is as tall as the other kids in her class and active and wild. I know people say not to do the cereal but I finally got desparate enough to try and minimize the amout of spit up that I began doing it...starting off with just a little at a time in her bottle until I figured out exactly how much cereal to formula ratio to use for the least spit up but that she could tolerate, etc. She liked it. I also went through a million bottle nipples til I found the ones that worked best for whatever the amount of cereal to formula ratio she was on at that time. I actually did this with both babies, but Amber's spitting up was practically non-existant once I started doing the cereal (it thickend it enough where it stayed in her belly). I was finally able to just stop Zantac on her all together. Good luck and I hope this helps.

my girls have both been on zantac for a while now. Lily started recently getting worse and worse again. I took her off the meds and started adding a little cereal into her bottles to thicken them up a little, help keep em down and she's a million times better.
