My son (singleton) is 5 months old, and we FINALLY got him diagnosed with reflux, after my pestering the Ped ever since his first check-up at 2 weeks. We got a different doc this time and she said that is exactly what he has.

Anyways, she told me to give him zantac .5 ml 2x/day. She didn't specify if it was to be before or after a feeding, just twice a day and to let him sit upright in his swing for 30 minutes after his 10p.m. feed (which we already did, as well as lay him at an angle in his crib).

He's been taking it since Tuesday, and no luck so far. Both nights we've been up at 1:30-2a.m. like clockwork. It starts with his feeding. Then about 15 minutes later he starts coughing, which turns into choking and him turning red in the face, then him screaming, and, finally, projectile vomiting. After clean up and rocking, we get him back to sleep in his swing or bouncy and he'll sleep contendedly the rest of the night. I've been giving the Zantac first thing in th mornin the around dinner time at night.

Funny thing is, he's perfectly fine through out the day. no issues at all at daycare, and sometimes (very rarely) he'll have spit-up after his dinner feed at home.

Is there something else we can do to help the poor little kid?? He scares the living lights out of us every night with the choking routine, but it's almost become commonplace. doesn't make it any less scary, but at least we know what's coming next and that he'll get over it.

    Thanks for any advice!

I didn't sleep for a few days afraid it would happen when I was sleeping.. so my pedi sent me to a specialist.. now she is on prevacid and zantac,
and fortunately no more projectile vomiting..just a little spitting if she eats to much. she loves her food :) Zantac dosage is according to
baby's weight. It does take about 1 week for meds to kick in all the way.

I read somewhere on here to give the Zantac on an empty stomach, and that made a huge improvement for my two (my pedi never told me this). I give it three times a day (he said you can do two or three times a day), right when they wake up, so their stomachs are fairly empty. I keep the Zantac on the changing table and give it before I change diapers first thing in the am, around 1pm and before the last bottle of the evening, around 7pm.

Hugs to you! It is sooo scary isn't it?

It took pretty quickly for us, a few days. We give .5 3x a day, and we give it to them as they are drinking thier bottle. We put the syringe in their mouth while they are sucking and they don't even seem to notice (smells terrible!)

Our boys were pretty small when the dose was recommended, and it's weight related, maybe a higher dose is needed?

Never worked for us, we started on Prevacid 2 weeks later, and that did work. My ds was on it from 2-9 months without problems and weaned without issues. The Prevacid I always had to give 30 minutes before a meal (he was on half a tablet twice a day), so I did right after he woke up and half hour before dinner.

We were on Zantac for 5 days and saw no improvement so they put them on Prevacid and within almost 24 hours there were signs of improvement. Unfortunately it is pretty common for the Zantac not to work. I would call the Ped maybe today if he's no better-that way you dont have to wait thru the weekend.

Well we didn't have any projectile vomitting last night, nor any screaming or coughing.... so I'm going to tentatively say that the Zantac is working. Fingers crossed for another good night tonite! I just can't believe it took me 4 months and 2 Dr.'s to FINALLY convince them (I guess cuz before it was considered 'silent' reflux because he never actually threw up. Now that he is throwing up, they'll treat it?? Who knows)
