HI there, I'm new to twinstuff and new mom to 11 week old twin boys. One of my little guys suffers what we all think is reflux and has been taking zantac for 10 days. He still spits up a large amount at every feeding - right after and then an hour or so later but doesn't seem to be in as much pain. How did zantac work for your reflux sufferers? should i talk to ped about changing to different medication.
    Thanks in advance!

From what I know, the meds only help with the pain of the reflux. They don't do anything for the spit up / vomit. I don't think there is anything that helps with that. It is just something that they have to outgrow.

If he's not in much pain and continues to gain weight, then the spit up is just something you'll have to deal with. Sorry!

:wavey: and welcome to TS. I have boys too. We had terrible reflux. The Zantac did not help us with the pain so we switched to Prevacid which helped them alot. So it they are not having pain associated with the feedings then the Zantac is probably working. As for the major spit up I had one of those. We saw a Ped GI and the best advice I ever got from him (if you are formula feeding) was to put 2tsp of rice cereal per ounce of formula in the botte (we were only doing 1 tsp per the Ped and it wasnt doing anything). Adding the cereal greatly reduced the amount of spit up, so maybe that is an option that you could talk to your Ped about. I am sorry you have to deal with it. Reflux is so hard on all involved.

I agree with Rachel. :good: The cereal is what helped my ds limit his spitting up. Like the previous poster said, the medicine is to help with pain not the spitting up. I'm sorry your little guy has to suffer with it, it's hard on them and us. :hug99: I would talk to your ped. before adding the cereal.

    Welcome to Twinstuff! :D

Like a pp- my son did not do well with the Zantac. I didn't notice a huge difference and it even seemed to increase his gas and discomfort. We found a rather large positive change once we started Prevacid.

We use Axid, it helps with the projectile vomit. He still spits up but the crying and arching are gone. We also use rice in the bottles and that seems to help him keep it down better.

my daughter who is 3.5 had reflux...and my twins now have it - the best advice I can give is to tilt their crib - 30 degree angle....and to have them "sitting up" while they eat - then leave them alone for awhile after they eat. I don't think rice cereal is reccommended til they are a certain age - and not for preemies. My ID twin daughters are now 6.5 weeks old.
