My boys are just shy of 5 months, and they were on Zantac for a while before switching to Prevacid. I ran out of samples yesterday, and for some reason the pharmacy couldn't fill the RX in time for me to give it to the boys this morning. So, they didn't get their meds this AM. They seem to be doing fine, though John is spittier than normal.

Question is, how do you know when your babies don't need the meds anymore??

    Thanks!

    Becky,

For us it took about a week to see symptoms reappear. It takes up to seven days for reflux medicine to fully leave your system, so you may think they're fine for a few days and then notice they take a turn for the worse. But if you think they're ready, give no medicine a try!

As you know... the amount of spitting isn't related to the medicine; the medicine just helps with the pain from reflux. So you may see more or less spit up - it's not really related. For my daughter, she spit up the most right around 4- 6 months then the spitting up stopped slowly until she didn't really spit up anymore by about 8 months. My daughter is 14 months and still on medicine. We've tried twice to stop the medicine, but within about five days to a week she would be in pain and start refusing her bottle.

Ditto pp! And always drop your prescription/call for refill about 3 days before you need it ;)

We started tapering the girls Zantac (after talking to our pedi) and watched for sx to reappear. For us, the Zantac NEVER helped Ana's spitting up. She just became a happy spitter while on meds. After tapering, we saw that both girls did fine, ate the same amount, and showed no signs of pain. Thats when we knew we could come off of it for good. This was around 6 months old (they started it at 3 weeks old).

We did the taper off thing just like Leighann. We went from 1/2 tab Prevacid to like a 1/4 tab and then to every other day and such. The GI did not want us to cold turkey it. So I might be inclined to refill the prescription and give your Ped or GI a call and see what they want you to do.

I have also forgotten to give a dose too and never had any issues with that either. :pardon:

You might think you're a pharmacist or something. :p

Thanks, ladies! I'm eager to get these boys off the meds...hopefully soon.

We were fully off Prevacid by 11.5 months. Every time we tried before that within 4 or 5 days things would get ugly.
