Both of my girls have reflux and I just have a couple of questions...

The Dr. prescribed prevacid for the girls. Does it have any side effects? What method do you use to administer it to your baby? Does it work?

The Dr. also recommended that we start putting rice cereal in the girls bottles. I can't for the life of me remember if she said 1tsp per 4oz or 1tbs, which do you do? Does it seem to help with the reflux? If you make your formula in bulk, do you add the rice cereal to the big pitcher or do you do it individually per bottle? Does it matter if you add the rice cereal before or after heating?

Sorry these may be dumb questions, but I am clueless. Thanks for the help!!

The Dr. prescribed prevacid for the girls. Does it have any side effects? Not that I am aware of.

What method do you use to administer it to your baby? I broke the solutab into quarters, put 1/4 of it in their cheek, and squirted a little water in their cheek with a syringe. By 5 or 6 months, I was just giving them 1/2 the tablet to chew. It dissolves very quickly.

Does it work? It did for Jake.

The Dr. also recommended that we start putting rice cereal in the girls bottles. I can't for the life of me remember if she said 1tsp per 4oz or 1tbs, which do you do? I added about 2 tsp per oz.

Does it seem to help with the reflux? Yes!

If you make your formula in bulk, do you add the rice cereal to the big pitcher or do you do it individually per bottle? Per bottle. If you add it to the pitcher it will turn into cement!

Does it matter if you add the rice cereal before or after heating? I mixed the bottles as I needed them, but I think I would add the cereal after heating.

Good luck, it definitely helped my refluxers as far as the amount of spit-up!

    I am not sure

What method do you use to administer it to your baby? Does it work? I take a quarter of a tab and put it in a shot glass with 2.5 mls of water. I use a droper then and squirt it out a little at a time so that the do not spit it out. It works okay however, I may try PPs way and see if it works better.

We add 1 tablespoon per 2 ounces.

It seems like they spit up less.

Add the rice individually or the rice will get two thick and let me also recommend getting a nipple made for thicker liquid or else you will be constintly getting clogged nipples. We use avent bottles and use the variable nipples that work well

I just put the prevacid in their mouth and it dissolves fast. They love it. :) It surely helps!

We do 2tsp. per oz of cereal for Libby and 3tsp. per oz for Tuggy! It does help. If I do not put it in, EVERYTHING comes right back out!

    Good luck.

At 6 months it is slowly getting better.

Agree with PP 100%. Use 1 tsp per 2 oz formula. Poor desired amount of formula in bottle, heat then add the cereal.

    Hope they feel better soon.

We used 1 tablespoon per 2 oz, because it had to be really thick to have any benefit for Anthony. So it was more like 1.5 teaspoons per oz. It did help with his reflux, but only if it was thick enough.

It didn't help with Ethan's because Ethan was getting EBM and the breastmilk broke down the rice cereal, and it was just as thin after only a few minutes.

I agree with adding the cereal to the individual bottles and looking for nipples that will allow it through easily. And we added it before heating, though i'm not sure it would have mattered. We ended up having to cut nipples, which made me really nervous!

We did zantac and not prevacid, so sorry I don't have tips with that.

We used Zantac so I am not sure how to answer most of your questions. I did get this from Drugs.com and its for adults.
Prevacid is the brand name for the drug Lansoprazole:

    Lansoprazole side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Less serious side effects may include:

    [*] headache;
    [*] nausea, stomach pain;
    [*] diarrhea; or
    [*] constipation.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

I agree with Becky! Prevacid helped my two a lot!! It also helped with their spit up. I did the same amount of cereal per bottle as she did. I also mixed the bottles as I needed them (well I had a big pitcher in the frig for the day, but poured them into the bottles when it was time for a feeding) and I put the cereal in after heating the bottle up.

We were on the solutab. I used a syringe and dissolved the tab in water and squirted it in their mouths. Prevacid worked wonders for my two!

I put half of a Prevacid tablet in the inside of their cheeck and then use a syringe to squirt water in their mouth until the tablet dissolves (only takes one or two squirts). Rice cereal has helped us a lot also... we do 1 tsp per ounce of formula and we prepare the bottles one at a time right before they eat.

Good luck, I hope your babies are feeling better soon!

Watch out for the rice cereal. It can be very constipating! We did a mixture of rice and oatmeal to keep our guys moving! Just check your oatmeal brand that it is completely wheat free (they have to put a warning if it's a plant that manufactures wheat products too). We did 1 tbsp per oz-- it should be as thick as tomato sauce (not paste, sauce) :) to help them keep it down. You might be successful with less cereal but we need a lot to make a difference. And yes, it makes a big difference. Every now and again, I think I'll stop giving it to DS and find him covered in puke later!

Prevacid has worked wonders for us. We just give it in the cheek too. Here's a website that may help you with the cost. I haven't gotten my card yet but I've got my fingers crossed that it works just like the person who recommended it said it did! (It took care of her copay so the rx was free for her)

The Dr. prescribed prevacid for the girls. Does it have any side effects? We tried Zantac and Prevacid. I find that if there is enough cereal in the bottle, we only have to use Zantac on rare occasions, when it is obvious the acid is backing up into my daughter's throat. I like Zantac better than Prevacid, but it all depends on your baby...

What method do you use to administer it to your baby? Very small medicine dropper from Pharmacy.

The Dr. also recommended that we start putting rice cereal in the girls bottles. I can't for the life of me remember if she said 1tsp per 4oz or 1tbs, which do you do? After 3months I finally figured out a consistency that works for us. She gets 3 oz every feeding, so I'll do 4 tsp of cereal (3 tsp of rice and 1 oatmeal to help with constipation, too much oatmeal makes her poop runny and frequent!). If she got 4 oz, it would be 5 tsp of cereal, etc.

Does it CEREAL seem to help with the reflux? Yes!

If you make your formula in bulk, do you add the rice cereal to the big pitcher or do you do it individually per bottle?
Does it matter if you add the rice cereal before or after heating? I do each bottle as I go. I pour in the water, heat the water for 9-10 seconds in the microwave, then add formula and cereal. If the mixture sits for too long it will get thicker and thicker. It actually gets thicker by the time I sit the bottle down, go get her and sit down to feed her.

Does it seem to help with the reflux? The prevacid helped took away their pain and they were able to eat very well. I think I noticed after 1-2 days.
