    Hello ladies,

My boys have reflux, and their pedi. put them on Axid which doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone used Axid before? I've never heard of it until now.
My second question is which reflux meds work better?

I have never heard of Axid before either but we use Ranidine/Zantac and it does the trick for my boys. In the begining it did take a couple of days to work though.

Both of my girls have reflux and started on zantac. Sofia is still on zantac, but Maia tried prilosec, went back to zantac and is now on prevacid (2 weeks now) which seems to be working. I know prevacid is not approved for children under 1 though so some pedi's dont like to prescribe it. We are going for an upper GI tomorrow for Maia too.
I think it just depends on the baby, some meds work differently for differnt babies.

    Good luck!

Mine had terrible reflux. I have heard of Axid. How long have they been on it?? Did the Ped say it would take a few days to kick in?? We started with Zantac and gave it 5 days with no results and got switched to Prevacid and within 3 days saw some results and it got better by day 7. Also if they are having nasty reflux issues I might also suggest a Ped GI consult. It was the best thing we ever did for the boys. Our Ped had recommended 1 tsp of rice cereal per ounce of formula and that really didnt do much but the GI recommended 2 tsp/ounce and that made all the difference in the world for my worst spitter. Hope this helps and dont hesitate to give you Ped a call if you think you need a change of meds.

My DS had reflux, but was never on Axid. How long have they been on them? If it's been more then a week or so, I'd suggest calling your ped again. My son was on zantac, previcid and prilosec. I don't know which one was "the best" but Prilosec is the one that worked best for my son. Good luck, I hate reflux, and I hope your little ones don't have to suffer too much longer. :hug99:

So far only been on Zantac and it seems to work so we haven't needed to change.

I would definitely call the Ped and see if there is something else you can try or find out if it might take longer for it to kick in. I think Becky's (Becky5) kids were on Axid. I could be mistaken... but she might be able to give you some more info on that particular med. I am sorry that you have to go through reflux..it is so hard on everyone involved. :hug99:

We started on Zantac and then switched DD to Axid early on because she wouldnt take the Zantac. According to my PED if Zantac does not work, neither will AXID and he said it is a better tasting version of essentially the same thing. It also costs more.

We ended up on Prevacid and I would say it is my miracle drug! I LOVE IT!

Every baby is different though and some have success with different drugs. Many a babies have done well on Zantac. The little guy I babysit was on Pepcid for a few months and it worked for him!

Good Luck finidng your miracle drug!

My DD has had severe reflux/GERD since she was an infant. We started on Zantac (similar to Axid) and quickly moved on to Prevacid, first compounded and now solutabs. No, prevacid is not approved for use in infants, but neither are a lot of other things that DD has been on. I can say it is very commonly prescribed and effective for many kids.

The difference between Zantac/Axid and Prilosec/Prevacid is that the former are H2 blockers. Prilosec/Prevacid are PPI's or proton pump inhibitors and are more effective at blocking the production of acid in the stomach.

There is a great website for information and discussion on the P2P website. Here is a link to a sticky on common reflux meds on that site: http://parent-2-parent.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25757

I have never heard of Axid. Is that the actual name or the generic name? Both of my girls are on Prevacid and it has worked wonders for them. We noticed a difference in their reflux, and most of all their temperment right away. I hope your little ones get to feeling better soon!

I have heard of Axid but neither of my kids were ever on it. They started on Zantac and we never really saw any improvement. The first Ped GI we saw would not change their meds so I found a new Ped GI. I was so much happier with him. Like PP said we increased the amount of cereal in their bottles and we switched to prevacid. It took like 10 days to see a change but it really was the miracle drug. I can not imagine life without it now. Good luck, once you find the right meds you will be so thankful.

Zantac has worked for us, although it did take a couple of days for it to really kick in at the beginning. We haven't tried anything else b/c it seems to be doing the trick.

we were on zantac and axid. Both stopped working after awhile, so now ds is on nexxium. If after a full week something is not working--I'd call again

My babies were on Axid, and Reglan was added a couple of weeks later because they were still fighting bottles. That combo worked well for awhile, and then Jake was switched to Prevacid. :hug99:

Thanks Ladies for all of your advice.
The ped. switched them to prevacid and I've started adding more cereal to their bottles.
Already the cereal alone has made a difference. I'll keep you posted.

That's great news and good job making that call for your kiddos. Adding extra cereal per the GI was the best thing we ever did!!! Keep us posted!!
