My dd was just diagnosed about 10 days ago with silent reflux, and put on zantac twice daily.

She did great for about the first week on the zantac, and a change of formula to sensitive (in case she's lactose intolerant like her mom, dad, aunt and grandma).

But now she's having trouble again with lots of gas pains/tummy trouble/screaming from about midafternoon on. It's only been less than 2 weeks, but do you think she needs the dosage changed already?

She's putting on nearly a lb a week, I just don't know how often the dosage should be upped.

We're also just dealing with our regular dr for this, but I wonder if I should ask about seeing a pediatric GI?

Danielle, Zantac is extremely weight sensitive, so yes, it's possible that she needs a new dose already. If she is still having trouble, I would ask to see a GI. It definitely can't hurt.

As Becky mentioned zantac is very weight sensitive...if she is gaining 1lb a week she will definately need an incrase. I would suggest asking your dr to switch to prevacid, if your doctor only prescribes zantac then definately ask for a referral to a ped GI. Prevacid is just a better med for most...its only give once, sometimes twice a day...its a strawberry flavored solutab so it tastes good, and its stronger than zantac. With zantac you will need to take your dd into the dr atleast once every 2 weeks maybe more for increases.

Mine hinda had the same thing go on. They did wonderful for about a month and then seemed to have a sort of regress. but we swiched from infamil gentalease to the AR and it seemed to help too. It took about a week or so but it made a difference.

Oh, and i called the pedi when it happend and she said that they hadn't outgrown the dose either so that wasn't it. We are currently on .5ml 2x a day

I think I'll try the adding in the cereal to her bottles, I was avoiding it because I was concerned about weight gain, she's already over 13 lbs. If that doesn't help I'll call and ask about the prevacid too!!

My first son had reflux where he spit up EVERYWHERE! This was 7 yrs ago. Do you know they never switched us off the zantac and only changed the dosage once, at 6 months when I told his dr it wasn't doing any good?! And they never told us about cereal, about med changes....we had NO info, it was very frustrating! And the worst is I realize now that he probably was suffering the whole time and we didn't know it! :(

I'm very thankful I'm more informed this time around and will be pushing for what needs to be done instead of letting another baby suffer!

Wow...I cant imagine the frustration back then, especially with the terrible reflux issues some go through! Reflux is SO common these days I'm glad there is so much info and what not!

I hope that the cereal helps!

Even 5 years ago, it was so different that it is now as far as treatment. Zantac was THE drug, and Josh's dose never changed either, even when he was refusing to eat.

I hope the cereal works for her Danielle.

Katelyn's on Zantac also... we tried Axid first and it didn't work for her.

She started out on 1mL 2x/day at first and now she's up to 1.4 twice a day and it works well for her... no more crying when she lies down.

ITA on switching to prevacid if the zantac stops being effective. it worked well for my DD for a couple months and then nothing, even upping her dose made no difference. now that she is on prevacid, she is a whole new baby! of course the 2 weeks waiting for the prevacid to kick in were the hardest of my life.... and it can't hurt to get a referral to a pedi GI, if you get an appointment and end up not needing it you can cancel, we had to wait a month for an opening at texas childrens hosp to see one and it was definitely worth the wait.

Wow Melina they started Rylee on .5 twice a day and she's almost the same age as katelyn, probably about the same weight since she was 12.7 lbs when they gave it to her.

I think my ped is a little too cautious about this, I'm going to ask about a referral to a GI dr for her.

that is a low dose...at about 1.5 months my LO's were on 1ml 3x a day and they probably only weighed about 8-9lbs?

I did, and it was the best thing that I did for them for their reflux.
