One of my twins has what I have heard called "silent reflux." He doesn't really spit a whole lot but when it comes up it gets in his nostrils. Lately I have had to bulb syringe him almost every night, sometimes two and three times per night. We are burping often, keeping him upright after eating, and have elevated his mattress. But he refluxes hours after he eats. The other night it was four hours after we fed him. Thank God I have a video monitor. He scared the mess out of me two nights ago. I think had I not woken up he would have been in a very bad place. He just can't breathe when it gets in his nostrils. I don't know that any of the reflux meds would really work because my understanding is none of them decrease the volume, they only affect the acidity.

Do any of you have experience with this? What did you do? How did you treat? It just seems like he does this an awful lot. It makes me wonder if there's not something else wrong, although I have no idea what it could be.

I think that you should take him in to the ped. There are medications that can help them to digest the formula faster, causing less reflux. :hug99:

My dd used to always reflux thru her nose.
    She has since outgrown that.

My twin girl does this , she has done it so badly before that she couldnt breath and we had to suringe her nose and mouth out. Took her to the docs and they told me she just has to outgrow it. Luckily she hasnt had an episode like that in the last month, but she still does "reflux" off and on after she eats for hours. So maybe as they get a little older it does get better?? Dont know if it helps, but it does seem to be getting less stressful, now she just gets it on her clothes, she really doesnt do in duringthe night anymore. They gave her Zantac- but it tastes nasty and she just spits it back out.

I agree with Becky. I would take him in. There are so many different medications that are for reflux, one has to be able to help him. Poor little guy and Mommy.

I agree, take him to the ped. Both of mine had reflux and outgrew it, but were successfully treated with Prevacid.

Scary! This is the reason I had mine sleeping in my room for three months - Evan used to do the same thing and scare me to death. I just wanted to let you know that he outgrew it (phew). I think you should mention it to your doc - I don't know why I never did.

Another one that agrees with Becky. In our case, eventhough docs said it wouldn't, it did decrease the amount of spit up. Even if it is the same, it can take away any pain he may be in. Good luck.

Both of my boys have reflux. During the first 2-3 months they would spit up and just like yours it would come out their noses, it used to freek me out. I started putting them in their carseats to sleep and it worked. Their spitting up got significantly better and they slept a lot better too. They are almost 5 months old now and I'm in the process of weaning them off their Zantac. They seem to have outgrown their reflux and they rarely spit up like they used to.

Yes, ask your pedi. Medicaiton depends on a lot of factors, including weight. Both my girls started on zantac, which doesn't reduce the spitting up but does control the acid and therefore the pain. They were 'graduated' to prevacid after they hit 12 lbs - interestingly it worked for my smaller girl but we had to go back to zantac for the bigger one.

If they don't like the taste, you might try a Mylanta/Zantac cocktail....my girls HATED the zantac and i would give them a mylanta chaser, which they loved (sweet, i think)....then i started mixing the two after checking with mypedi that they are not contraindicated.

check out the 'medicine binkies' - they are a brillant invention that have a chamber for liquid medicine and a tube in the nipple part, so they suck it right out. you KNOW some Mommy invented it! Keeps you from trying to get medicine in w/a syringe and watching half of it drip out.

watching it come out of their noses and the choking that ensues is AWFUL.

Thanks everyone!! We did try Zantac but didn't see much improvement, even with his pain. The ped wanted to start us on Prevacid but said he was too small because he only weighs 9 lbs. We go back in a month for his checkup. Maybe he'll be close to 12 lbs by then and we can reconsider Prevacid. In the meantime, I'll keep the monitor turned up!!
