    Hi,

I've seen many of you mention here that your babies have reflux and that they spit up. One of my daughters does too... but what I'm trying to figure out is when you all say "spit up" do you mean a wet burp where a little milk comes back up? Or do you mean a spit up that empties the entire contents of the baby's stomach? I usually say "spit up" for the milk that comes back up at a burp and "throw up" for the times when she pukes everything out.

We have our first appointment with a Pediatric GI as well as a swallow study/Upper GI next week and I want to make sure I'm using the terminology correctly. Also, how often do your babies "spit up" and/or "throw up"? I keep saying Eleanor's reflux is severe, but perhaps you all are dealing with worse reflux...

    Thanks!
    Trish

when i talked about my son's reflux/spitup, i usually referred to a lot of milk coming back out. usually enough to soak a burp rag, not to mention me, him and the couch. my daughter would have some spitup with burping as well, but just a little bit. not a soaker!
from what i remember of your previous posts and the fact you are going to a specialist, i am sure you are using correct terminology. best thing to do, i think, is just describe it as best you can. (ie amount, consistency, etc.)
    good luck at your appt.

That is how I define it also! One of my babies rarely spit-up, but still had reflux. She was more likely to throw-up though, for some reason. Jake, spit-up, but it was constant, or it seemed that way anyway!

Good luck with the GI doc, let us know how it goes. :hug99:

I also define it the way as pp mentioned. When my daughter would spit up, it was enough to have to change her soaked bib and very often her clothes as well. I wouldn't say it was the whole bottle but usually a good ounce to 2 ounces which is a lot of milk to come out at once!! Vomiting is very different. That is usually PROJECTILE and a lot more forceful. When they throw up for the first time, you will KNOW the difference
