Boy I am going crazy trying to help my babies with their reflux. They are on Zantax twice a day and we have been putting rice cereal in their bottles to try to help keep everything down. I'd like to think things are a little better then before but I am not sure if it is the medicine or the cereal or the combination of both. Besides the frusrtration of them refluxing and being so distressed by it, I am also having major issues with the nipples from the bottles getting clogged. I have different flow nipples and the faster ones still get clogged. It does not happen every time and I am not sure why it happens with some and not others. Has anyone else been through this? Do you have any suggestions, is there a better cereal to use. I make bottles ahead of time. Like 5 each at a time, and I am now using only neosure and I add the rice cereal when I make the bottles. Would it help if I do it right before I warm up the bottles instead or perhaps after they are heated? Any input would be great!

What kind of bottles do you use? I have heard that dr browns makes a nipple just for cereal in the bottles. Good luck and hope you can figure it out.

Oh how this sounds like something I struggles with.

I am not sure what brand of cereal you use but beech-nut dissolves better than gerber. Also, I would not recommended making the bottles ahead of time. The longer it sits, the more the rice grows and the thicker the liquid becomes. I would say to add the cereal after the bottle has been warmed. We never warmed them though as we made bottles as needed from room temperature water! My last suggestion is what we had to do. I took nipples and I used a steak knife to make the holes bigger.

My DS has thicker formula (3tsp. per oz.) so his holes are very large. My DD only gets 1 tsp. per oz. so her hole is a whole lot smaller.

    I hope this help!

Yes they do make one, but even it was not big enough for my sons thick liquid. :)

I was never able to get the right nipple to allow the rice to go through, and I even made my formula using a powerful hand mixer so it was mixed as good as it was going to get. We had to go to Enfamil AR which went through regular nipples just fine. I hope you find a solution soon! :hug99:

We used Avent cereal nipples for our older DD which has slots so the cereal will go thru easier...I also nevery had a problem. When I tried to make my own holes, sometimes I would make them WAY too big so you have to be careful there.

Dont make the bottles ahead of time and add the rice cereal. It will thicken over time making it very difficult to get out. We used the Dr. Browns with the "Y" cut variable flow nipple and added 2 tsp of cereal/per ounce of formula. They worked really well for us. Sorry you are having to deal with reflux. It is so hard on everyone involved.

I agree with Rachel! We used a size 3 Dr. Browns, with 2tsp per oz. I found that the Beechnut rice cereal worked MUCH better.

We used a tbsp per oz for our little ones. Avent variable flow nipples worked well but initially too fast for our ds but he eventually got the hang of it.
