reflux and adding cereal

Hi Ladies,

I've read a lot about you guys adding cereal to milk to help with reflux. at what age, can you begin to do this? can it be added to breast milk? i've also read about some women mixing formula and breast milk. does that mean mixing the two together or giving a bottle of breast milk, then a bottle of formula, then a bottle of breastmilk?? thanks, hannah

We started adding cereal to formula at about 5-6 weeks of actual age. I would discuss it with your Ped first if you havent done so already.

I am a bit foggy about adding cereal to breastmilk. I want to say that it doesnt actually mix with EBM and just tends to clump at the bottom or run into the nipple when tilted to the mouth because it is so much heavier than breastmilk. I could be wrong about this but I remember having issues with it not working.

You can mix formula and breastmilk together in a bottle or you can do individual bottles of each if the babies tolerate the formula.

 

Our pedi told us to do this at about 4 weeks. Talk to you doctor before doing it though. I think I've read that cereal doesn't mix well with breast milk though. I think there is something else you can add but I can't remember what it is called.

 

The pp's are right that EBM and cereal don't mix well. I started Daniel on rice cereal when he was about 4 months adjusted. I tried to do it with breastmilk but it didn't do anything. I then switched him to formula.

Definitely talk to your pedi about it.

 

I started adding cereal to the formula with the twins at 2 weeks of age.
