Anyone have a good recipe for breakfast bars? They love those things but even the healthiest at Whole Foods have too much sugar. I have looked online but I don't love anything. Okay, and I don't have an open window to go look at the library or funds to buy a cookbook. If anyone wants to share their tried and true recipe that would be absolutely fantastic. My big concern is the sugar, it can have practically anything else in it! :)

Are you looking for an oatmeal based one? I think have a few recipes that have oats, whole grains, dried fruits that are sweetened with honey or agave. If you add clean eating recipes to your search, you'll probably find what you're looking for. Clean Eating recipes don't use refined sugars and the sweetness comes from fruit and/or honey, maple syrup, agave.

For months now I've been making these for my very picky preschooler, and I'll probably start giving them soon to the babes:

By the time the oven is preheated I've already got everything mixed and ready for the pan, and the recipe is very forgiving -- for example, I replace half the milk with a half cup of pureed pumpkin, use two eggs instead of egg beaters, and often throw in some ground flaxseed and wheat germ for extra nutrition. Granted, the recipe calls for a half cup of sugar, but you could probably replace with another sweetener or skip altogether. I hope this helps!

I've made these for my twins and they loved them!

    Yogurt Cereal Bars

    2 cups corn flakes
    3/4 flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar (you can knock this down to 1/8 of a cup)
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
    1 cup flavored yogurt
(banana/strawberry etc.. but we find plain works well with using more spices)
1 egg slightly beaten (2 egg yolks if desired)
    2 tablespoons flour
    Preheat oven to 350F

Combine cereal, 3/4 cup flour, sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
Cut in butter or margarine until coarse crumbs form.
Press 1/2 the mixture firmly into the bottom of a greased 8inch square pan.
Mix yogurt, egg and 2 tablespoons flour in another small bowl.
Spread over cereal mixture in pan and then sprinkle the remaining cereal mixture on top
Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown; cut into bars when cooled.
