Hi ladies, I have just begun teaching my newly 5 year old twins to read from the book Teach Your Child to Read in a 100 Easy Lessons. It's been going really well and the kids are enjoying "school". DS has picked up on it so easily and can connect that the sounds are actually words and sometimes he doesn't even have to sound out the letters out loud before he knows what the word is. My DD, on the other hand, isn't quite connecting that the sounds are words. We are on lesson 16 and they are now using the picture stories and I'm hoping that the pictures alongside the words will help, but does anyone have any ideas on what I can use as a supplement for her to make that connection?

I've heard of the program, but have no experience with it so I can't really help. I'm so sorry.

I am assuming that she has already learned letter sounds and is having trouble blending vowel and consonant sounds together. Is that what you are meaning?

Yes, I think that's what I mean, lol. Her letter sounds are perfect and she can say them in order, she is just not blending them into one cohesive word :) I found some games online that I think may help her out and I think they will round out the program as a whole.

Glad you found something! I'll keep my eye out for anything. I use abeka. They take one consonant and blend it with each vowel before they start learning to sound out full words.

An issue mom's of twins often have is that we want to keep the kids on the same level. It is easier, it lessens rivalry, etc. It may just be that your DD isn't quite ready, yet, while your DS is. I know it is hard to move ahead with one kid, but it may be something that you need to consider. Maybe have her do some other reading-type work instead of 100 Lessons for a few months and see if she is ready to start then. Starfall is a great reading website.

Thank you! I do understand that the twins will not be on the same page all the time, but figured that I would try and add some activities to what is provided in that book. I think DD is more of a hands on, active learner anyway. We'll see what happens the rest of the week, just making learning fun and stressless for her. I think we may take a couple weeks to slow down and just practice blending sounds through different activities. We used starfall for years but stopped when #4 was born, she took up the last of my discretionary time, but I think I will begin to use it again. I was actually trying to recall the name of it yesterday but could not remember. I appreciate all your help!
