Quick question about identical twins :)

Hi ladies! I am having a hard time finding information on identicals not looking the same & am wondering if it is possible? I had triplets, 2 girls & a boy, in March of this year. The pathology report came back that there were only 2 placentas & no where did it mention that the placentas were fused so we can assume that the girls are identical. The situation is that they don't look anything alike. They do have the same eye color, the same features, & the same blood type BUT 1 girl was engaged & the other was breach. The shape of their heads is VASTLY different which is why I think they don't look more alike. Also, they have matching birthmarks on the back of their neck. Any ideas or do they look more alike than what I see?

Sorry, this is the best pic I could find w/ the both of them in it. That is my FIL.

Thanks girls! I know it is easy for me to say they look NOTHING alike but I wasn't sure & since most people that know them personally are also around them all the time, they can see the difference too. I totally believe they are ID b/c of all the info I posted in the OP BUT DH & his parents don't believe it.

Why not do a DNA test just to put all the questions to rest? I have no idea how much it would cost or how you go about it, but we had decided if there was any doubt what-so-ever it was important enough for us to know that we would have done it. We didn't have to worry about it - our boys have different blood types, and barely even look like siblings. Complete strangers can tell them apart (even when they aren't both present they are that radically different).

Your girls could certainly be identical and not look it if their head shape in-utero was influenced by position. The best way to make sure would be to do a DNA test. The company that I have heard of the most is Proactive Genetics, and from what I understand it is a pretty simple cheek swab test.

I would especially think that they may be identical if they have the same features. My girls are identical and have identical features although as they age their face shape is slightly different. One is more heart shaped, the other is fuller. (Not too different though... I mixed them up three times today!)

    HTH!

I suppose we could. I asked their pedi if we could do 1 & she asked if we had a medical reason for getting it done b/c otherwise the pathology report was good enough to verify them being ID. This has prompted my hubby to not want to pay although he questions it. We also don't have the extra $ to throw around & have to rely on what we already know. I guess I am wondering if complete strangers (you ladies) think they look alike. I am part of 2 other boards but the ladies there are bias b/c they have seen them since birth. I have to say this much, there are definitely times where they look very alike to us based on the angle at which they are laying or sitting. I just wanted some opinions ;)

1 of my girls had plageosephaly (I know I butchered that spelling). We may still need a helmet for her b/c of the asymetry. Her head is VERY oblongated & squooshed (another really technical medical term, LOL) diagonally. The other 1 has a perfectly round head from being engaged in my pelvic bone the whole time.

first of all - WELCOME to TS!! and huge congrats on your beautiful babes! Triplets.. wow!
It was hard to tell from the pic but I could definitely tell they looked very similiar! head shapes REALLY play a big part in making ID's not look alike!
I agree - have a DNA test done on the girls to find out for certain... I've heard of 2 companies.. the one the pp mentioned - Proactive Genetics (I beleive that one costs $150) and there's also DNA Solutions (aka: dnanow.com - which is $99).

feel free to post some more pics for us all to look at! :)

There have been a couple people who have used this site www.dnanow.com for $99. I am planning on using this company when I've saved up the money. It's hard to tell with the photos you shared, do you have any more?

I just have to say - your babies are the cutest!!! I think your girls look very much identical, as well. My boys have different shaped heads and that makes many people wonder if they are really ID, but they are...it seems to be pretty common for head shape to change their looks (especially for the people who know them best).
    Congrats on your adorable children!!!

I cant tell if your babies are id. I am bad at that!

I just found out my boys are id. They had their own everything (and we did ivf). I did not think they looked alike enough to be id. Most of our family could tell them apart. They had totally different head shapes (one had torticollis so that really made them look different). But as I have learned, head shape is not genetics.

We used proactive genetics to get our dna results.

    Thanks!

They are beautiful! Congratulations to you and your family on happy, healthy triplets. Your daughters look very similar to me. I would guess they are identical. My twin daughters are identical. They looked very different at birth and through the NICU with different head shapes (still to this day, almost 9 months later). Birthmarks are not necessary a sign, as my daughters have different marks. The doctors told us my daughters were identical, but we had a zygosity DNA test also. In restrospect, it seems silly to test because we had been told all along they were identical and they had the same blood type (O-, which is rare). Within two weeks, the test confirmed they are identical.

Mine also have O- blood. I have a gut feeling they are identical based on all the info we have but that test for only $99 may be worth it to squash anyone's doubts.

Welcome! They are beautiful and look very much alike to me. We also tell our ID girls apart by their head shape! (Poor girls) We did have a DNA test just for curiosity's sake.

Okay.. this is my FAVORITE game..

However, those pics are not going to do it for me. I need to see ALL of their facial features UP CLOSE and the ears. Head shape doesn't matter AT ALL.

Can you please get some UP CLOSE and PERSONAL shots pls?

When you look at the right ear on one is the right ear on the other girl the same? What about if you cover up everything in a picture except the eyes.. Are they EXACTLY the same?? Noses?

Need more pics!!! and of them NEXT TO EACH OTHER.. not singly.

Thanks! I'll save you the 100 dollars :) And in those pics w/ FIL, I would say they are not id.. but, I can't really see them.

I think they are ID too. My DD has the same problem with her head, it seems to go diagonally to the left, but somehow nobody seems to notice, even if it's obvious to me... The pediatrician said not to worry about it and it will get better over time... So who knows. It does seem to have got better in the last month though.

I've noticed that what I think of as ID twins isn't what a lot of other people think of as ID twins, even my DH. I go strait to the genes... are they genetically ID, one egg that split. My husband only bases it on Do they look alike. I had asked him about it because I'd seen a lot of stories on this forum about random people asking "are you twins ID or Frat?" and when the response is "ID," the random person replies "Well, they don't look alike, so they must not be ID." So maybe a genetics lesson would settle the issue cheaper than a DNA test. :)

I'll do the best I can w/ the pictures you have requested. As for their features, besides the eyes being slightly different in shape, everything else seems to be the same. 1 daughter's face is very compacted while the others is very spread out due to the shape of their head.
