Quick Advice on frequent peeing

We are potty training today. It is really the first day we are staying home and wearing underwear and this is our main focus for today and tomorrow. Our boys are old enough to know when they need to go and for better or worse we are in it now! We thought that our big challenge will be around pooping, and it probably will be, but we haven't gotten to that yet--I think perhaps they think they are waiting to get a diaper on and holding it in or something. But that isn't my question for the moment!

It is 5 PM and R is still wearing his first pair of underpants for the day! When he goes he pees a lot and he must be consciously (sorry about the spelling) holding it in in between the times he goes to the toilet. Yay R!

J is a different story. He is probably on his 8th or 10th pair of underwear now and he keeps peeing in them. It seems like every 20 minutes or so. He doesn't seem to be holding it in as well and when we do manage to get him to the toilet only a little bit comes out. There is nothing physically wrong with him like any bladder infections or anything. I just think he's not quite there as to being concious of when he needs to go or something.

Any quit advice on how we can proceed through the rest of the afternoon and evening? Thanks! /Joel

Congrats on the successes! Personally, I would focus and continue with R, and wait with J, and give it another shot in a few weeks. Good luck!

I agree with pp. My Sarah did fantastic and went throughout the day with no accidents. Allison, on the other hand, refused to go at all, and then would wet her pants. I tried for three days to get Allison to go and we had the same results each day, so I stopped. About two months later I tried again with Allison and she did great with no accidents. I would say he just isn't ready yet.

Wow! I wasn't expecting that as an answer but I'll go talk to my wife about it--I just hadn't even though of that as a possibility! The first thought that comes to mind if we continue this with R but not J is that R will refuse to continue once he figures out what we've done. Sort of like "Hey, J isn't potty training, so why should I? After all, I want to continue wearing diapers too!"

The only other thing I can add is that after the entire day of success with R was that he let one really big pee go all in his underpants and over the floor --what was that all about? Was he needing some of the attention that J was getting throughout the day?

    Thanks! /Joel

Was he playing? He is going to have an accident or two, so I wouldn't worry about one pee if he did great the rest of the day. Sarah did fuss a little because Allison got to wear her diaper again, but that lasted maybe a day. We started giving Sarah M&Ms and letting her put sticers on a chart everytime she peed and she never complained again. It is possible to train one and not the other, many on here have done it. I'll admit, I was worried about the same thing, but Sarah was a champ and for two months I had one in panties and one in diapers.

Same here, and I never had an issue with it, as Emma was truly interested and Jake wasn't.

As far as the accidents go, even if they are ready to PT, they will most likely still have one here and there for awhile.

Just an update: After two days of peeing R had his first official poop on the toilet this evening! And what a poop it was. Never had to change his underpants during the day for either day this weekend.

J is still considering it.... We keep needing to change his underpants and no poop yet. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

We just potty trained our twinks this October. DD2 did great and is still going strong, day and night trained! DS really wanted to succeed, but was really having a hard time "getting" that he needed to pee and by that time it was too late--he would have an accident. After a few days of changing his undies we were ready to put him back in a diaper. But I didn't want to give up yet and I felt it unfair, especially since he loved the idea of potty training, to stick him back in a diaper. So I called one of my sisters, who has 2 boys, and asked her if she had any advice. This was her advice: let them go without a diaper and undies during the day. She would put them in a shirt that was long enough to cover and let them run around/play without underwear. She also planned on not doing anything for a couple of weeks so that they would have success. Her boys rarely had accidents. So with this knowledge we let DS run around without undies for the next week. We saw a difference within 12 hours. After 4 or 5 days he "earned" his undies back. Within a week or so he was definitely day trained. At nap time he went "commando" in a sleeper ;). Now he's in underwear during the day and diaper at night. (I'm also a SAHM so we are free to let him run around like that.) He's only had a few accidents since, because we're out of routine, so I'd call that a success!!! HTH
