When I had my first ultrasound at 6wks and we found out it was twins, I was so shocked I forgot to ask any questions. I don't even know the babies heart rates. My next appointment is 12/29 and I want to be more prepared on things that I should be asking. My previous ultrasound and the one scheduled for 12/29 will be with my fertility doctor, then 1/07 I will go to my OBGYN from then on and have all my blood work and tests run then. What do I need to be prepared to ask???

i mostly just lurk, but i know as i have gone along through my pregnancy i would come up with questions and write them down so i had them to take with me to the dr. visits, otherwise i would forget my questions. as you get farther along you will have more questions to ask. when i was in my first trimester i don't think i had a ton of questions to ask the dr b/c i was just hoping each time i went in that they would still see the babies and hear their hearts! everything else was gravy. i had a book i was reading too that helped answer questions - it may help you and it may give you more to ask about too... "When you are expecting twins, triplets or quads" by barbara luke.

    congrats and welcome

I agree with the previous person, write questions down as you think of them and bring them in.
I tended to be very prepared and asked questions way ahead of what week pregnant I was. My doc got used to it, and even began to appreciate the fact i was so informed and prepared for our appts.

I aksed what to expect in the timeframe inbetween appts.
Find out what your obgyn's 'schedule' will be for you, u/s appts, when they'll want to see you. Ie-once a month until 20wks, then biweekly. If and when they'll do a cervix check. My doc only did one at 24wks to make sure all was ok. My doc also didn't do any internals, they wanted to limit infection.
When/if will they test for proteins in your urine/gestational diabetes.
At what week will they not stop labor (my doc wouldn't stop after 34wks)
What their protocol is for taking you out of work

I know these are things you have to think about after the first trimester, but like I said, i'm an information freak!

Feel free to get information from your last appt at your next appt.

I also read ALOT! I LOVED the book 'double duty'.
This website will prove invaluable-I got more here then at my docs office!!

I remember I was not looking forward to leaving my fertility doc...i loved getting u/s often.
    Congrats! H&H 9mths to you!!

Ditto Specky; those are great questions to be asking. Also find out how much experience your dr has with multiples; make sure it's enough that you're comfortable.
Find out, too, what their standard protocol is with labor and delivery for twins. Do they discourage vaginal births for twins? Do they want both babies to be vertex? Are they experienced in doing breech extractions for Baby B if it comes to it? etc.

I also read a lot and my top recommendations are When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads by Dr. Barbara Luke, and Mothering Multiples by Karen Kerhoff Gramada (sp?).

My OB sends all twin mommies to a peri - you may want to ask if you will be seeing a specialist too. I would ask if the babies seem to have their own placentas or share one? will your OB let you try for a vaginal delivery if baby A is head down or do they recommend a c-section for all twin moms and if everything goes ok which week do they deliver twins? Which hospital(s) do they deliver at and if more than one which one would be better for you as the mother of multiples. My OB did a quick ultrasound at EVERY visit to distinguish between heartbeats - I am glad they did - it really put my mind at ease! I would ask your dr if they would. I would ask which over the counter medications were ok for things like headaches, tummy upsets, cold symptoms etc... just because you never know when these things may strike.

    CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BABIES!!!!!!
