My babies will be 11 months this week. They have successfully been on soy formula for several months. I decided to give them some YO Baby yogurt the other day (non-soy kind) to see how well it was tolerated. My babies were both gassy and uncomfortable, but did ok overall. The next time I tried it they puked several times. So maybe they really do have lactose issues. So now I am a bit concerned as to how things are going to work when we go off formula completely. Do most of you go straight to soy milk or do you try whole milk and see what happens? I am completely uneducated about soy products. What exists out there that I can give them for table food????

    Thanks,
    jennifer

Jennifer! These are great questions!! You are going to have a nice long discussion with the pedi at your 12 mo. appt. coming up. I don't know if you can say definitively that there are lactose issues with only one test.

Have you given cheese? (I couldn't live without this staple) How does that affect them?

I would talk to the doc and you might start on lactaid or soy milk to be sure! I hope it's not a real problem! [IMG]

My ds was on soy milk until he was two. He liked only the vanilla flavored silk though. They also make next step formula in soy which is also good til age two, plus it has some added nutricion.

There are tons of soy products! They have just about anything you can think of with soy. Yogurt, Ice Cream, Milk, Cheese, etc. I haven't tried all of the products myself, but, I've heard that they aren't too bad!

Keaton was on soy until about 9 months - then I started trying him on some regular formula (that Logan was on). I graduated shifted him completely off soy that way so the transition to whole milk would be a little easier. It's gone really well so far!

my boys have been on soy since the beginning. not for any specific reason, i just felt it was easier for them to digest etc. my 2yo had very bad colic that was treated with soy milk and rather than go through that again X2, I just went straight for soy. But now that we are eating solids I give them all kinds of milk products and they have had no probles. They get yogurt, cheese, ice cream, cottage cheese etc etc. Gabe even sneaks a drink of DS1's sippy of chocolate milk once in a while. They have had no problems and i will probably be transitioning them back to regular formula here in a couple months to prepare for milk.

I just switched my girls from soy formula to whole milk. I did it very slowly and it took a little more than two weeks to completely change over. The girls had no problem.

We had initially started soy after I stopped breastfeeding because they spit up so much with the lactose formula. My son had to be on soy as well, so we decided to go ahead and use the soy.

But no problems here when we switched over. As a matter-of-fact they seem to like the whole milk much better.

I'm totally not an alarmist but you might want to look more closely at some of the qualities of soy before feeding it to your babies, especially little boys. It's full of estrogen and that is sure to effect their development. If there isn't any real reason to give it to them, I wouldn't. There are quite a few countries that have restricted soy or issued warnings about it. Our country is not one of them though.
