Question PLEASE

Discussion in 'Pregnancy Help' started by froggylicious00, Jun 17, 2009.

I had my 12 week u/s today and looks like they are sharing same placenta. Does this automatically mean they are identical...or could they be fraternal still. Can someone PLEASE shed some light for me...thanks big bunches mommies for helping out!!!
p.s. they have differnt amniotic sacs

yeppers, you are having yourself a set of identical twins....CONGRATS :)

it's nothing to worry about, especially since they have two different sacs. twins, fraternal or identical, are high risk and have many complications but generally speaking the pregnancies are normal just a tad uncomfortable.....ok a lot uncomfortable.

with twins that share a placenta they will most likely send you to a specialist to monitor you from about 18 weeks to 26 weeks on a bi-weekly schedule to check fluid levels as identicals run the risk of twin to twin transfusion syndrome whereby one twin sucks up all the nutrients of the placenta gets really big and leaves the other to stay small...this is worse case scenario and is rare. do yourself a favor and DO NOT research identical twin complications, it will only drive you insane with worry.

i'm not going to lie and say that carrying identicals or mono-di twins is a walk in the park but in the end it will be worth it.
i've had my fair share of scares and surprises with my mono-di boys.

just hang in there and congrats!!!! :D

yes, if they are actually sharing a placenta then they can ONLY be identical.

the confusion comes in that sometimes, on ultrasounds, it can look like there is one placenta when in fact there are TWO placentas fused together. in that case your twins could be identical OR fraternal.

either way, they will likely monitor you more closely (as PP mentioned) to watch for TTTS. HTH!

Yes. Congrats on the ID's. Make sure they monitor you closely for ttts. Yes, it's rare, but it does happen. I was diagnosed at my 20 week ultrasound. In the beginning I wanted frats, but I adore my ID's and it's so fun to see how different they really are.

Congratulations! I had one placenta as well and each baby had their own sac. Just like someone posted before, the placentas can be fused and look like one. I don't believe they did an extensive examination of my placenta so I still had my doubts. We did a DNA test any way just to be sure and it confirmed my girls are Identical. Now that my girls are 16 months it's easier for me to tell them apart because of their personalities but sometimes we still get them mixed up. What fun you have ahead of you!! :D

Yep, but if the placentas are fused together, (might be hard to tell) they could be fraternal. I'm sure you'll be watched a little more closely from here on out. Good luck!

most likely if they only see one placenta this early you're not seeing two fused. we had this discussion with my perinatal specialist because my guys also had a single placenta and two sacs. because they found the single placenta very early on, like yours, it's unlikely there would have been an event that would have caused them to fuse.

so in that case you can be fairly confident that they're identical.
