One of my DD's keeps complaining about her mouth hurting and I just figure that it is because she is getting her last set of molars. The only thing is that unlike when she got all of her other teeth, she is refusing to eat most food, except yogurt, her gums are super red even in the front of her mouth, and she won't let me brush her teeth anymore which was never a problem before.

Do you think that something else is wrong or is this normal for getting 2-year molars? I have looked on-line and the symptoms seem to fit, but also for tooth decay so now I am freaking out. I did give them bottles in the crib, I know bad, but only for a couple of months when they were babies cause I was in survival mode at that time. They have been off bottles since 14 mos. and only drink from straw cups, not sippies. They didn't start having apple juice until just a couple of months ago only milk and water before that.

I was thinking of taking her into the ped. but would feel silly if it is just normal teething. Just wanted to see what other people experienced when their kids got their 2-year molars before taking her in.

When Ian and Montana were sprouting molars -- they would bite on anything they could get into their mouths. I think it's normal. But I remember worrying about the same thing...thankfully the good women at TS were able to assure me it was normal. I remember their gums being red and they refused to eat anything but something soft for a couple of days ... I would give motrin 30 minutes prior to feeding and then attempt to see if that helps. If you feel something is wrong though, because you are the momma and you know in your gut that something is really off -- then take her in. It's always safer to get it checked out.

Our DS is getting his 2 year molars right now, too. He does seem a bit fussier with these than when the other teeth erupted. It sounds like your DD is experiencing teething, but it is also possible that she is experiencing something else, too. It does concern me if her gums in the front of her mouth are red. Does she have any other symptoms? (i.e. fever, discolored teeth, puffy gums, etc.) I agree, tooth decay is a possibility even if you didn't allow her to go to bed with a bottle. I would notify her pedi just to be on the safe side. In the meantime, try to see if she will allow you to wipe her teeth with a towel instead of brushing. You might want to see if she will rinse her mouth, too. (I know this is difficult to teach a young child, though) This way you can try to keep her teeth as clean as possible until a diagnosis. HTH!

I'd take her to a pediatric dentist for a checkup. They'll be able to tell you if what you're seeing is normal and will be better equipped to deal with a tooth problem than your regular pediatrician.

I didn't get the red all over stuff. We were fussier and had some night wake ups - but that's all. I would have it checked. There could be an infection!! Chances are that everything is fine, but check it out and give Motrin!
