I think that's how you spell it...she went in for her first check up on Monday at 8weeks pg...and they called her today saying that her culture showed up with a staph infection...and it was also in her urine...so they are putting her on antibiotics for a week... Thought that it was a little odd to find staph in there. Or can that be normal?... I've heard of other bacteria..anyway, anyone else have this and their docs also wanted to treat it?? Anyway possible that it's just a normal part of her bacteria that really doesn't need to be treated??

Are you sure it was staph and not strep?

    staph saphrophyticus

Sounds like she has a UTI, with staph saphrophyticus being the culprit is what I am reading. It is the 2nd most common cause of UTI's(e.coli being first). If you type in staph saphrophyticus, you will find lots of info, but most of it is medical essays, so it's kind of difficult to read!

definitely staph and not strep...and they found it in her culture from the swab they did "up there" with her pap smear....so not just a UTI....very weird I thought.

Hmmm, I don't know! I guess if it can live in your urinary tract, it can live "up there" too??!!

I never had that or heard of it but staph can be pretty serious so I am sure the medicine they give her is safe for the baby and she needs to take it. keep us posted.

She is going to take it..but I'm just concerned that if they do a urine test and find it still showing up that they will want her perpetually on antibiotics... some bacteria can be naturally occurring...and also urine tests are notoriously off when it comes to really assessing UTI (I learned this last year after weeks of being told I had a uti that just wasn't clearing up...and in spite of me NEVER feeling UTI symptoms... a kind nurse finally told me that most urine samples are not clean ones...most of them are contaminated and unreliable unless they put a catheter up there.) ..there's just too much possibility that it's been contaminated AFTER it exists the body... she has no other signs and symptoms of a UTI. Anyway hopefully she goes back and they find no trace of it. Some bacteria is just hard to kill these days b/c of people being on antibiotics all the time... I told her to pump up her yogurt intake this week to hopefully get her natural defenses up too.
