Question about when to get MMR

We did not have the MMR done at the girls' 12 month WBV. We did chicken pox instead. I mainly chose to do this because they were preemies, and they are still on the lower end of the growth chart, and I just didn't want to do it yet. Pedi was a-okay with my decision.

Well now our 15 month WBV is coming in a couple weeks. I think I'm okay with Lily getting the MMR, she's gained over 2 pounds since her 12 month appointment. But Grace has basically not gained anything. So now I'm trying to decide if I want to delay her MMR again, or just go forward with it.

I really don't want to do one and not the other, and I don't want to get them too off schedule.

If your twins were on the smaller side, when did you do their MMR? Do you think it even matters, their size, that is?

Both of mine got it at their 12 month visit and were fine. They were both under 20 lbs. at that visit, Emilie was 16.13 and Trevor was 19.9.

Good luck deciding when to get it.

ETA: At 12 months they got the Hep A and proquad (which is the MMR and chicken pox combined).

We didn't schedule the boys 12mos visit until they were almost 14mos old. At that appt we got the MMR but didn't get the Chicken Pox. We will get the Chicken Pox at 16mos before they start daycare.

Did they try to give them the HEP A vax?

Edited to add they were only 20 and 21 lbs at that visit and we didn't have any kind of reactions.

I don't think there is a problem with them having it if they are a little smaller. We had ours done last week C is 18 lb 11oz and B is 21 lb 13 oz. My older DD was also under 20 lb when she had hers and we didn't have any issues. Talk to your pedi about it and see if there is any reason for concern.

We did not have a weight issue and I have never heard of that being an issue before, but I waited until the 15 month visit to do them. That was just my personal peference, and they had no reactions to it.

I am not sure why weight would matter. My boys were very small when they were born (2.6 and 3.9) and they both received all of their shots "on target". If I were you, I would keep both kids on the same vaccination schedule whether you delay it or not.

We waited. Casey was taking her good old time talking and I just wanted to see some improvement there before we did the big shot. Not sure why but I just wasn't ready. I kept them on the same schedule and delayed Mandi too. We ended up doing them at our 2yr WBV and our pedi was just fine with it.

we did ours at the 12 mo WBV (at 13.5 mos) and they didn't even cry when they got it...they got all their vaccines on schedule and never had a reaction...

eta - DD was 17 lbs and DS was 19.5 lbs at the visit which was just last week...

I'm so glad to see you ask this question, I too only had the chicken pox at 12 month WBV and I also opted out at the 15 month. Mine are still under 20 pounds and at 15 months were just starting to really talk. I think if both are talking well by 18 months I will go ahead with them. Good Luck with your decision.

Here in MA, they do MMR at 15 months but I asked to wait until 18 months. When 18 months came, my pedi asked me what I wanted to do...if I wanted to do them that day at 18 months or wait until 24 months. So, we waited until 24 months and they will get it on 7/27/07. They will actually be 2 years and 12 days old.

I'm going to wait till at least 2, maybe two and a half. I had all these illnesses and survived so I may not have it at all. I'll see how nervous I get as the time approaches.

That's actually NOT why they give these vaccinations. It's true that for children mumps, measles and rubella are usually not life-threatening (though they can be), but for adults who get them, they can be devastating. In adults, these diseases can cause sterility and birth defects/miscarriages. So, we vaccinate our children so that they won't get them as adults -- or pass them on to non-vaccinated adults.

We delayed giving the MMR until close to 3 years-old. But, our doctor told us that should any of these diseases be present in our community, we'd have to be vigilant about keeping our kids quarantined should they get sick, so as not to endanger adults.

We're waiting until they're 2+. Just to make me feel better.

If you wait until 2 or 3 for the first MMR shot, at what age will you get the second?

I delayed the MMR shot until just this Friday. The girls had just turned 3 years old. No adverse reaction, except for lots of crying. We also did Hep A shots then.

We will have the booster some time around when they start kindergarten. I am currently holding off on the Chicken Pox Vac, but they are now up to date on all other shots.

I am fine with vaccinations, but I don't agree with the number that are given to infants, so I had most vac shots spread out over time vs 5 done at once. The MMR shot was the main one that I delayed for family worries of autism (whether true or not). It made me feel better to postpone it.then.

When they get ready for Kindergarten. We have no more shots (aside from flu) until then anyway.

Just a quick question - why have some of you opted to delay the chicken pox vaccine? My girls go for their 12 month appt this Friday and I was planning on delaying the MMR anyway, but I am curious about the chicken pox now....any info would be a great help!! Thanks!

Thank you for posting this! We go for our 12-month check up on Thursday and I am planning to delay the MMR until 2+ years old. We had all our other shots on time and I am not sure how my pedi is going to react to this.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. For some reason I had size on the brain regarding delaying MMR, not speech. Both girls are talking up a storm, lots of words, so I think I feel comfortable going ahead and having them get it at their 15 month appointment.

All of my kids got the shots when they recommend them... my oldest actually got 5 shots at 12 months :( None of them had any reactions whatsoever.

I haven't done chicken pox because I think the vaccine isn't proven yet, they will probably get it when they go to preschool as a precaution but I don't want to have them get 10 vaccines at once. I think 5 is bad enough.

My boys have gotten all their vaccinations by the regular schedule, and never had more than 2 or 3 shots at any given time. They had their second MMR at 4, and at 5 just had their DTaP, and Polio--now no more shots until they are 11! They have never had a problem with any shot.
