When I had my son they put one in me because I had an epidural- but they put it in me after the epidural took effect- and shortly before it wore off- so I didn't really feel either part!

I woz petrified of the cathetar (sp), I asked them to make sure they put it in after the epidural. They took it out I think about 24 hours later and honestly I didn't feel anything having it taken out.

They normally don't put the catheter in until you are numb so you don't even feel it. Taking it out doesn't hurt at all.

They asked me if I wanted to get the catheter put in before or after the spinal. I chose after and they looked at me funny. Taking it out was not a big deal. I did ask the difference and they said that in the OR there would be more people there. Heck, I was going to be opened up anyway, I didn't think it was a big deal.

I had a catheter put in after my daughter was born because I was so swollen I couldn't go. I had a ton of stitches inside and out! I can tell you that the insertion and removal of my catheter was 100% not painless! I didn't even know they had inserted it and I can tell you I was very sore "down there" already. They removed it the following day when some of my swelling went down and again..didn't even know they did it.
    So try not to worry.

I didn't feel it at all and I have to admit - I may have the world's smallest bladder so after having to get up to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes for the last few months having a catheter was AWESOME!!! I was actually sad when they took it out and I had to get out of bed. :FIFblush:

Sometimes there is a slight discomfort when putting it in/taking it out, but it doesn't hurt.

I had one with an emergency surgery and have never peed 'straight' since (sorry if tmi). hahaha

They put it on while I was knocked out and I was awake when they took it out, it was uncomfortable but I didnt think it was painful.

Mine didn't hurt going in, but it sure was uncomfortable. I had mine put in when I was placed on the mag, so I didn't have the choice of being numbed up already...lol. I WISH!!! I stayed a month on hospital bedrest and I had it put in on the ONLY day I had a male nurse...GO FIGURE!!! LOL!!! Kind of embarrassing. Then, DH is sitting next to the bed saying, "WOW, is that the SAME tube they use on men, that's BIG!" NICE!

I had mine taken out about 3-4 days later after my c-section. I didn' feel a thing coming out.

I was awake and NOT numbed for all 6 of mine!!!!! It felt weird, but not painful. As soon as it was functioning, it felt like I was peeing myself for a few minutes. I was awake for it being taken out each time also, once again, not painful, just weird feeling.

I did not feel it either way. I must admit...I was bummed when they took it out. I really got used to not getting up each time to go. Especially after having the csection!

I had it before the spinal, and it was uncomfortable, I wouldn't say that it hurt.

I've had 2 - one after the epidural - did not feel a thing in or out. The other I had before the spinal, and it stung. I had a good nurse, but it was not pleasant. She said the more you can relax, the easier it is. Out wasn't a problem for the second one, either.

I had one right before I started pushing when delivering the twins, I didn't feel a thing, probably on account of the epidural. Epidurals rule, that's all I have to say!

I've had a catheder twice. The first time was when I had DS. I had to have it because I was put on mag and not allowed out of bed. It didn't bother me at all, until they took it out for good. It burned like crazy! I swore I would never have one in again. Maybe it's because I was already really sore from pushing him out??? :unknw: Then with the girls it was uncomfortable and unlike the first time it didn't hurt/burn when it got taken out.

Like some of the previous post said, i thought it was uncomfortable. Actually, at first, I think it was the nurses fault though, she put it in and it burned or stung really bad. I told DH at that point that I was never having kids again b/c of the cathetar. Go figure, 15 months later, here I am having another one. It probably was better if you relax but I was nervous. Coming out, it felt weird too but it's just a matter of getting used to it. Dont be too scared though....it's not terrible and you kinda get used to having it in.

I had mine put in before my spinal. Wish I had known that I could have it put in after! I thought it was pretty painful. Really stung on the way in. For me, one of the worst things about having a c-section. Although once it was in, I LOVED it! After getting up to pee every 15 minutes, I was in heaven. Didn't feel a thing when they took it out.

I had the spinal..then the catheter. I had a burning sensation when they took it out..only lasted about 5 seconds though and compared to actually having a C/S..that was nothing!

I didn't read the other posts but mine didn't hurt, I got it after I had my epidural. When they took it out it just kind of felt like I was going to pee but then it was fine a minute later.

I've had an epidural three times with my kids and once with knee surgery. It doesn't hurt, but is uncomfortable. With a lot of things dealing with medical stuff...the more relaxed the better! Good luck!

I was petrified about the cath removal too! I had the epi in already when they did the cath so I didn't feel it, but when they removed it, I was so scared ... but I didn't feel a dang thing.

I was kind of sad to get it out. It was Awesome!! After they took it out, I had to get out of bed to potty!! WWWAHHHHHH!!!!

If only we could have them for the whole end of pregnancy! That would be ROCKIN'!! That 5 min. bladder wouldn't be an issue at all!! LOL!

The nurses waited until I had an epidural before they put it in. I don't remember even noticing it while it was in and I don't remember having it removed.

I agree with everyone who said it was uncomfortable. I have had two where I wasn't numb and one with an epidural. It is not the greatest feeling, it feels like you have a completely full bladder when they blow the balloon up and it stings when they put it in. After they take it out it stings too, and you feel like you have to pee again but nothing will come out.

It's definitely manageable though....you'll be fine if you have one!

when they inserted and removed the first one, I had my epidural and I didn't feel it at all. The second time, it was uncomfortable going in but not coming out. I did have some minor injury to my urethra from the second cath that made urinating excruciating for the first probably 2 weeks pp! But I don't think that's all that common.

Ditto!!! Mine went in after my spinal and came out 24hrs later. Didn't feel any pain with either. I LOVED having it in!! It felt so good to not have to go to the bathroom and feel like your bladder was going to explode! The only reason I wanted it out was so I could go shower and I knew I couldn't do that til they took it out.

The only thing was the nurse taped the tube to my leg and if I moved it a certain it would pull on the tube. I finally asked her to untape it so I could move my legs around. Besides that it was a piece of cake!

I guess I'm the odd one. To me, the catheter was worse than the contractions I was having. It wasn't the going in and taking out, it was the having it there. Unfortunately I had several before and after delivery (c-section) due to preterm labor and complications after birth, so I wasn't on an epidural or spinal for the majority of it. The first time I had one was when I was put on the mag, and I had the nurse pull it out because it felt like a UTI. I preferred to use the bedpan. I actually did develop a pretty fiesty UTI after all this, too. But then, this was after several catheters and not just one.

I will say too that the skill of the nurse does play a MAJOR role. The first one I had was the worst. The next several were not as bad. The placement of it has alot to do with it, I think.

I hope this doesn't scare you! Just don't feel bad if you're like me. Everyone always told me how great it was so I was sadly disappointed and wondering what was wrong with me!

Going in was very uncomfortable :p but coming out was like nothing. I was having a hard time empting my blatter after the babies were born so in the middle of the night they felt my belly said if i couldent go that they would have to put one in. i tryed to ge so bad but couldent so they put it in. it was a relief once it was in and i could empty myself but not something i would want to do again <_<
