i started solids on tuesday and ever since the boys (both of them) have been throwing up A LOT like entire bottles worth. it only happens once a day but still it's bothersome. now they don't burp well AT ALL so i am wondering a few things...

    1. could the throwing up be a result of not burping properly?

    2. peas = allergic reaction?

    3. digestive system just doesn't appear ready for solids and to try again in another week?

now i should note that this it NOT projectile it's just spit up in massive quantities.

    thanks!

Personally, I would just put solids off for another MONTH. Your boys have had so many digestive issues with their bottles that they really need time just to get used to drinking those again. There is truly no need to be feeding them solids right now, so give your family a break and revisit it in several weeks.

so wait 2 weeks and start at 6 months?? i started because GI gave us the OK and they knew perfectly well what our problems have been...reflux, not really digestion.

i was just reading that allergic reactions can present themselves as throwing up...makes me wonder if they are allergic to peas...i know i certainly don't like them...lol

My pedi gave me the OK at 4 months but my girls were not ready and Amelia was puking it up, so I stopped. If they are puking it up they're probably not ready. They don't need any solids right now, what they need is their formula. I'd definitely hold off, maybe try again in 1 week and see how it goes.

Peas are actually a bit harder to digest than a lot of other veggies. One of my twins had terrible gas pains when we tried them. Also, like the others have said, just because the doctor gives the go ahead doesn't mean the babies are ready. One of mine clearly was not ready when we started so I would offer him a tiny spoonful of fruit or cereal each day when I fed his brother, but I didn't push it when he spit it right out. If both of my boys were suddenly spitting up and the one thing new was food, I would stop the food for a few weeks and then start again with something else. I know that bananas and avocado are both really mild. I always start with them after rice cereal.

ok thanks! GI said it was OK to straight to veggies since they got such a thick consistency of cereal in their bottles for the reflux issues.

i'm going to call them on monday and see what they say about the possible allergice/intolerance reaction to the peas.

the other veggie i have in the cupboard to try is butternut squash and carrots, what would you go with next?

they are good with chewing and eating from the spoon so i know they are "ready" i just don't think the peas are sitting well with them. at least that's my best guess.

i couldn't find avocado at the store (i've heard babies like it too) so i got the other stuff instead.

i will hold off a week though before trying again. so NEXT monday i'll introduce either the squash or the carrots.

I really like the website wholesomebabyfood.com for figuring out what to feed when. I don't give my kids carrots before 6 months of age because carrots contain nitrates. Butternut squash is a good choice. It's mild and is a low allegen risk.

This was exactly what I was going to say. If they are throwing up, their digestive systems may just not be ready. It happens that way, often. And even though the GI gave you the okay, doesn't mean they are ready, there is no way to know that until you try it. Some babies are just not ready as soon as others. I would give yourself a break & wait a month or so before trying again.

My first though was "How come they are already eating peas on Saturday when they just started solids on Tuesday?" ... I really think that peas are too early to give. I would start out with rice cereal first especially with reflux issues. Once they eat that good, try adding some banana which is soothing for tummy to the rice cereal. Then move on to veggies, one at a time.

My daughter (at close to 6 months) was first eating butternut squash, banana, avocado, papaya, sweet potatoes, zucchini..then later....carrots and only then peas which were hard for her tummy to digest so I still give it to her only from time to time. Also, try to give one vegetable at a time for at least 2-3 days to watch for reactions/indigestion and allergies.

I also agree with others about being ready. I still give solids only to my daughter while my son refuses and spits up if given food. He hates it and turns away and I don't push it. I do offer once a week just to check if he changes his mind. Every baby is different and what GI's recommend is just a general guideline. Also before 6-7 months, food is really just practice to "awaken" taste buds.

    Good luck!

Agreeing w/ everyone else about their readiness (or lack thereof). And I, too, am curious why you started w/ peas? Did the GI give you ANY info on what to introduce and when??? If not, well...their expertise has already been debated enough so I'm not going there.

Don't know if it's been covered already in another post, but here's the recommendations as I know them:

Start w/ rice cereal (leave the mixed grains for a couple of months). Just a few spoons at a sitting. Work with cereal only for a couple of weeks (or when they display readiness to advance...i.e., not spitting everything up, accepting the cereal, etc.). Then introduce ONE fruit or veggie. Yellow fruits and veggies (apples, bananas, squash) are usually the mildest on their tummies and most palatable to newly developing tastes. Introduce ONE new food every few days to a week, watching for allergic reactions along the way. THEN - IF they are handling these foods well - proceed to the stronger foods...carrots, peas, beans. Avoid the sweetened "dessert" foods (in my rules - ALWAYS...babies don't need dessert!!) and stay away from meats for at least a couple more months.

Oh, and avocado - esp. if they are having issues, I'd hold off on that, too. While it can be considered a "mild" food and is a great source of nutrients, it is also a food that a lot of people are sensitive to. I love the stuff, but it gives me a HORRIBLE stomach ache every time I eat it (and I eat everything under the sun). :( I experimented w/ avocado with the babies and I don't think they handled it well, either. So we set it aside, at least for the duration.

Just do your research. I make my own food and love the wholesome baby food site, too. It's a great source of info. And...again....just because a doctor says something does NOT mean it is an absolute truth or that he/she gave you enough information to move forward. When in doubt ask questions, double check, and confirm the information you are given via other RELIABLE sources.

Yeah, I wouldnt have started with peas. :pardon: I would start with yellow veggies like squash or sweet potatoes. They have a "sweeter" taste to them. Then work your way to the greens.

And I totally agree that all babies are ready at different times and even though you got the go ahead from the GI he or she is not in your home watching what is going on. They talk in generalities. Some are ready at 4 months and some are not. I think the boys are just telling you they are not ready. There is absolutely no harm to them to stop for a month and then give it another try.

I have to agree with the others, it sounds like the boys are telling you they just aren't quite ready for solids yet. And ditto starting with cereal, even though they get rice cereal in their bottle, it's a whole 'nother ball game when they are eating it off a spoon and learning how to chew/swallow. I won't repeat what's been said so just "ditto everyone else" :)

my guess is the burping...abbey does that...she doesn't burp well so i bounce her on my leg to get her nice and shook up so she'll puke up a little and the burp will come too...they've both been on solid foods since about 3 months old, they just turned 5 months at the new year

If I read the post correct, they weren't puking up the veggies, they were puking up their bottles, right? Doubt it was the peas. I have never seen an allergy to peas. There are all sorts of beliefs about what foods to start first but I will tell you I am a pediatrician and I started peas and green beans right after cereals because I didn't want my babies to get used to the really sweet foods. It could be that they were eating the same amount of formula and the solids were still in their stomachs leading to overeating and puking. Especially with their recent bottle shenanigans, who knows how much their bellies actually hold! If they take the foods well, don't get too fussy afterwards, and just puke up a bottle once a day I wouldn't worry too much. If they gag, spit up the solids, get really fussy or have some sort of GI distress, then I would hold off for a while.
