I swear I thought I was going to have to call 911 or perform the heimlich (sp?) manuever on her - but thank God she is OK. Go figure, the first time I ever give them fast food in their lives because we were out late last night buying a car, she chokes on a chicken mcnugget. I thought I could hand her one and that she would bite manageable pieces off like her brother. She started out doing it right, but then proceeded to shove a big piece in her mouth then take a drink from her sippy before swallowing the food. It lodged in her throat and before I was going to attempt to do the heimlich (sp?), I threw her over my shoulder and hit her back. It came out after what seemed like an eternity. 20 seconds later, she was fine and was happy and talking away.

I was terrified, shaking and crying at the same time after it came out. Her poor face - sheer terror. I hate having that kind of image burned in my brain. It makes me teary just writing this!

When do they stop trying to shove food in their mouths that is obviously not an appropriate size, and when do we get to stop breaking EVERYTHING they eat in to tiny bite-size pieces?

I don't cut/break most things into peices anymore, but My girls are 19 months old. Bell still CRAMS as much as she can into her mouth...drives me nuts! Even if it's cut into peices, she will shove as many of those peices in. I wish I had an answer for ya!

I'm so sorry about the experience you went thru, It would have affected me the same way! I'm so glad your little one is alright!

Sorry how scarry!! I'm glad she's OK! I posted on here awhile back about Eli choking and turning blue. I can tell you that since then Eli has been eating slower and not stuffing his mouth full of food!

I can only imagine how scary that must have been to witness. My nanny told me that E choked yesterday while I was working. I felt so helpless because I wasn't there. The only thing you could try is modeling how to take one small bite and then putting the piece of food down until they are finished chewing/swallowing.

My son does the same thing, even if its cut up just shoves his mouth full. If I give him one little piece and then tell him he has to eat it before he get another one he spits it out and throws it on the floor and then wants the new piece. Little stinker, I wish i had the answer!

Wow, that must have scared you to death. :hug99:

I still break things into little pieces for Sarah. (Amy's not as much of a problem in this regard.) I think the problem with something like a chicken nugget is that it's all in one tidy little piece, it's just that the piece is too big for toddler mouths. I don't have to cut up really big things like pieces of toast or even pizza, but if it's something that comes in pieces already, like tortellini, I have to make the pieces smaller.

Hopefully it will have scared Chloe too, and maybe she'll be more careful.

Laney loves to shove food into her mouth as much a she can I am still working on getting her to eat one piece at a time. I dint buy Mcdonalsd nuggets because they are so hard if we are out and the kids need to eat it is burger kings tenders.
