My boys got their 2 month vacc. last Tuesday and one of those was the rotavirius vacc.. Well the next day one of my boys started haveing diarreha. Called pedi and they switched him to a soy based formula which has helped some but not a lot. Now seven days later he still has it and now the other one is starting to have loose stools.

Has anyone else had any reactions to this vacc.? I am starting to get a little worried that thier stomachs might be missed up not to mention that I was not informed about what kind of vacc it was and that it is not really needed.

My girls have received the rotavirus vaccine three times so far (I think that's it) and thankfully haven't experienced any bad reactions. Have you talked to your pedi again?

I'm not sure of the side effects but i know that the vaccine is well worth it! My son was born before they started giving the vaccine and he ended up having the virus for 7 days start he ended up in the ER twice and back and forth to the doctor at least 3 times. The vomiting and dirrahea were awlful he would even vomited in his sleep it scared me to death. Could it be anything else you think?

My boys just had the vaccine last month and one of them also started throwing up and having diarrhea. The doctor had warned us that it's a live vaccine, meaning that they actually get a modified strain of the disease against which their body then has to produce antibodies. Sometimes, that leads to a very mild outbreak of the illness. Rami was suffering for about ten days, but was eating normally during that time. I would get in touch again if your little guy stops eating properly or this goes on for more than ten days. Very scary to see such little ones suffer so! I hope things will improve quickly!!

Here's a link to the vaccine insert that comes with every vaccine and something the doctor should give any parent that vaccinates their child.(you can ask for them as well)

About half way down it has the adverse reactions and diarrhea is one of them. Hope your little one gets to feeling better soon!

Mine both got all doses of the rotavirus. No issues at all. So many things can cause loose stools, it's kinda hard to figure it out. Mine would get them sometimes randomly, when nothing in their diet changed at all.

As far as vaccines go, you should really educate yourself on them. I know that we depend on our doctors for a lot of info, but you need to be your child's advocate and ask for all the information prior to giving the vaccines.

My doc gives us all the documentation about the vaccines, but gives them the day they receive the shots ... so it's not like I have a lot of time to read up in the doctor's office. They do give us a full schedule of what shots are scheduled for when, so I can research ahead of time.

I am very much pro-vacc, and with the exception of the MMR (which they are getting soon) have been vaxed fully on schedule and I wouldn't have it any other way. But I think it's our responsiblity as parents to be as informed as possible.

Not saying that you aren't! It's tough for us new parents to get all this stuff down ... but going forward, I would ask your doc for their vax schedule, and research on your own. Technically, NO vaxes are required. So to say it's "not really needed" it's kinda misleading. You don't have to give them ANY vaxes. You just have to figure out what is right for you and your children.

Mine had all the rotovirus vaccines and had no problems. I would contact your pedi if the diarrhea continues and I hope your little one feels better soon

    Hi,
I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. Its a pain in the tushy, literally. When my twins received the first (of 3) rotavirus vaccine, they had 3 WEEKS(!) of diarrhea, including blood in their stools and the worst cases of diaper rash I have ever seen. I suspected it was the vaccine, but wasn't sure. The doctor said it could be, but it should be better after the first dose. So they received the 2nd dose and had 1 week of diarrhea. So now we knew it was the vaccine causing it. The 3rd dose only gave them 2 days of mild diarrhea, and now we are done with that vaccine, thank the lord. I swear if my MIL hadn't been visiting to help out, I would have lost my mind during those first 3 weeks of constant, screaming (painful) diaper changes. I sincerely hope your experience will be much faster and milder! Start using diaper rash cream now with every diaper change and hopefully you can avoid the terrible rash from all that diarrhea.

If I had known it was an optional vaccine, I would have waited for them to get it later. They were 7 weeks premature and I wonder if that could have had an influence on the reaction they had to the vaccine. All that being said, rotavirus is AWFUL, and I am glad they are at least partially protected. We have had several (well 2 really, but it felt like more :) ) stomach flus in our house so it doesn't provide immunity to all the stomach flus out there.

    Good luck!
