Hi there. I know that we are supposed to increase our protein intake for multiples, especially single placenta but I was wondering why it is so important to drink them slowly? I have a hard time getting them down in general so I usually just try to finish them as quickly as possible. What is the reasoning? Also did it seem to increase your general wt. gain? Thanks. Melanie

Honestly.. I don't know why they would have you to drink the shakes slowly all day.. I would guess just so that you are distributing it slowly to the babies all day long. However.. I am with you. I can't do that. I down one in the morning and one at night as quickly as I can and then eat something as a chaser LOL..

Since I started drinking 1 shake a day I started putting weight on.. though it wasn't significant weight gain about 1 pound a week.... it was something. I just started 2 a day this week and they are hoping to see my gain weight even better.. they are wanting atleast 3 pounds a week.

I had never heard to drink them slowly? I never did - I don't think they made me gain all that fast - or maybe I just didn't pay attention because I knew I was going to be big anyway?? I always made sure the drinks were as cold as possible and just chugged them!

I never heard to drink them slowly. They are so small after all and best really cold like pp said so the faster the better. I actually got used to the Ensure in chocolate flavor. Someone recommended the vanilla Boost but didn't get to try those. I bet you could even put it on ice if that helps it taste better.

I never heard of the drinking slowly... I had my protein shakes with icecream, and fresh and/ or frozen fruit. I loved banana and strawberry. It was a great way for me to get quite a bit into me.

They are totally expensive. I find that Walmart has the best deals on them.

You are right, they are not cheap. <_< But I never heard you should drink them slowly. I liked to put them really cold and sometimes would put them in the freezer for a bit so it was kind of like a milkshake. :D

I also had never heard to drink them slowly. Now, I don't know if they are on the market anymore but when I was pregnant I drank the Ensure: Healthy Mom shakes that had more protein in them. I don't know how much protein is in the shakes you all are speaking of though. I did find I put on weight drinking these but I was on bedrest too not getting any exercise from about 26 weeks on.

I also assume it's so that the nutrients get distributed slowly to the babies. I have no idea how nutrient transfer works to the baby but I would guess there is a upper limit to how much you can send to them at one time and drinking the shake slowly would allow you to get more nutrients to them. That's pure speculation though. :)

I had 3 of them a day when pg - we had TTTS, and Dr. Delia (who does many of the laser surgeries for TTTS) said to drink them slowly between meals - I was also on horizontal bedrest. I believe he said to do this because it would give a constant flow oif nutrients to the babies - especially since one was having trouble getting the nutrients - and maximize the protein intake. I'm sure he had a more clinical way of saying this, but that's what I remember.

If you aren't dealing with TTTS, then I think drinking them any way you want is fine! I was ready to do anything to save them, so i did as he said! It worked!

    Anyway, that's what I know.

Thanks for the replies. That does make sense and I have been able to drink them slowly throughout the day by opening the can and leaving it in fridge and taking a sip every hour or so. Now it is routine and I actually have come to like them. Thanks. Melanie
