Can you ladies who had natural deliveries relieve me of what I know is an irrational concern.

Can you explain to me what happens after you deliver the first baby, while you are waiting for the second baby to be delivered. Does your doc and nurses stay with you? How bout DH or whomever you had with you, is everyone still there supporting you, or does the birth of the first cause commotion and running about.
How about for yourself, how did you feel after the first knowing that you were only half way done.

    Thanks!!

I had to have a c-section with my twins but will they let you go for a all natural delivery with twins or will they make you get an epidural just in case of an emergency c-section delivery of baby B???

I guess i meant a vaginal delivery and not necessarily a med free one!

There were enough nurses for one to take Baby A while the OBGYN & delivery nurse helped to deliver B. If it is a healthy, no complications, full term delivery the nurse keeps Baby A in the room with you while she cleans, diapers & wraps her & they do the Apgar test. (Come to think of it - maybe there was a Dr there or just a nurse - I don't really know - but each baby had her own people assigned to her.) Your DH will be free to stay at your side or go oogle ;) Baby A. There will likely be a few (or more) minutes of downtime in between the births.

vag birth with an epidural :)
Once DD was born they placed her on my tummy for a min while they sucked out her nose etc. and she made this tiny noise and i said "O my god" than one nurse took her to her little warmer bed that was in the same room we were in. than the OB broke DS's water and i just was watching the nurses clean Abby up till i was told to push again. DS was born 9 minutes later. My ob stayed right there (between my legs LOL) the whole time and DH stayed right by me the whole time, DS went right into the warmer but everyone stayed in the room. till i was cleaned up a bit. than they took the babies to get washed, dressed, and swattled and they were back in the room very shortly to be with us.

You will definitely have people with you the whole time - especially with twins, they tend to throw in a few extra bodies just in case. I had a midwife and OB, L&D nurse and husband with me most of the 5 hours between Tom and Jack, with a perinatologist visit for good measure.

It might matter how long the interval is, how busy it is at the hospital and what else your medical staff has to cover that day whether or not they stay. But like PP said, if baby A is healthy, you'll be able to enjoy his/her company and that makes the time FLY :)

I had a vaginal delivery, and three teams of Dr.s (one for each baby, and one for me). I had an emergency delivery because of extremely high blood pressure - some test results had been misplaced and I should have delivered a week earlier  . After my son was born his team took him about 10 steps away to do what they do, and my ob stayed with me. My daughter was born 11 minutes later, her team took her to care for, and then both babies were off to the NICU.

I have to say that if you have the opportunity to have a vag. delivery, go for it. The recovery time is so much faster!

There is so many people in the room if you deliver this way you will not be alone. My DH stood by my head (with the anestesiologist) the whole time. A MFM Dr. and a MFM fellow delivered the babies and they stayed "down there". I had a nurse to the right of me (she was monitoring the babies and guiding the u/s). A nurse to the left of me (doing something) There were two neonate teams each with a neonatologist, nurse, and respiratory therapist for the babies. As soon as Abby was born someone from the neonate team came over and grabbed her and took her to the warmer. Taylor was a breach extraction and was born 3 min later and handed off as well. I watched the teams work on my babies while the MFM stitched me up (seemed like forever). My babies were off to the NICU before I was out of the OR. I told my DH to go with the babies. They took me back to recovery and gave me something to eat and then I was alone (my DH, mother, father etc. were all in the NICU with the babies). I had to wait 4 hours to go see them in the NICU (because of the epidural) <_< . It was the longest 4 hours of my life!! But that OR was one hopping place!

Vaginal delivery, no drugs except for a little gas and air right at the beginning....and it was only last week, so it's fresh in my mind! lol....

It will indeed depend on how long it takes baby 2 to come on down! My girls were only 5 minutes apart, with baby 2 breech, and that was with me being given strict instructions of :"DON'T PUSH! No matter how bad you want to!" so there really wasn't a whole lot of time. They had two sets of medical staff in the room, one for each baby, and they were as follows:
    Midwives,
    ObGyn
    pediatrician
    LD nurses

SO, it was covered from the get go, since each baby had their own medical team, which was nice! You could have fielded a softball team with the med staff in that room! All in all, even though it hurt, going drug free was a great experience!

There are so many people in the room with you that a team did leave to take care of Amelia once she was born. But the people who took her were not my doctors or my nurses or my anesthesia people. There were 4 people for each baby, 2 nurses for me, a guy behind my head administering the medicine to me, and 2 doctors. The doctors never left me. After the first baby was born they took her quickly to clean her up and I wanted DH to go see what she looked like but he was too nervous to leave my side. You can see me on the video telling him "go check her out". Luckily my mom was in the OR with us and she took the camera over to where they were cleaning Amelia off and we have her first moments on tape. I only got about a 2 minute rest and the doctor told me it was time to push again. When I was pushing I was sitting up and doing 3 sets of pushes. I did one more set of pushing 3 times and Lily came out, 5 minutes after her sister. Although the birth certificate says it was a 9 minute difference, we have it all on tape and it was only 5 minutes. It took longer for the placentas to come out then for the babies.

Does a placenta ever come out in between the babies?

You should be delivering in the OR even with vaginal delivery (that was my hospital's policy). I delivered vaginal with no drugs (I didn't intend for the “no drugs” tho). I had been on hospital bedrest, but was sent home for 10 days before my water broke at home and then got to the hospital ASAP. I had my perinatologist, OB and 1-2 resident doctors, anesthesiologist in case emergency c-section was to be performed (thankfully she wasn't needed), a sonographer watching the babies via ultrasound, plus nurses everywhere, and a set of neo teams for each baby. After I delivered Baby A, the perinatologist told me to start pushing at the next contraction. They were both head down so I think they didn't want Baby B to flip (which is supposedly common). I delivered Baby B 3 minutes after Baby A so you don't have any time to think. I just thought to myself please give me a break I just delivered one, but I had a complicated pregnancy so I figure they didn't want to take any chances and besides they have the MD stamped on the end of their name. I was a little surprised at how quick our second son came as I had read 30 minutes apart in many books. It was a better (physical) recovery than my previous daughter's vaginal delivery (less tearing, effects of epidural, smaller babies, etc.) but way more emotional since the boys were transferred to NICU within minutes (I hadn't even delivered the placenta before they were whisked away).

I had a doctor, 2 midwifes, anethiest, student and my DP in the room and they were all there untill both babies were born. I had had an epidural just incase i needed a c-section as my 2 were 8 weeks early so as soon as jack was born he was placed on my chest for 5 secs and then whisked away by the NICU team. Then Sophie had to be turned she was born and i didnt even get to see her they just whisked her off. Both placentas were delivered after both the babies were born. x

My Dr would have let me deliver in the regular L&D room, but the Maternity ward OR wasn't functioning that day (a/c problems), and the regular OR was down 14 flights and across the hospital... too far in case of an emergency. So I did have to deliver in the OR. My girls were over an hour apart. After Sydney was born, Sabrina turned transverse and wouldn't be budged, despite the OB and a midwife basically jumping on me trying to turn her. So I was getting prepped for a c-section (you can't have a baby sideways)... but I was also lucky enough to get to nurse Sydney. She was hungry, healthy and no point in not doing it, LOL. My DH loves to tell people, btw, that his wife BF one twin while pushing out the other. That's not quite true. Suddenly, about an hour after Sydney was born, just as I was probably going to be put under general anesthesia (I'd had an epidural that didn't work, and the anesthesiologist didn't want to risk the spinal not working for the c-section), Sabrina's water broke. When it did, she dropped & turned breech. My OB reached up and grabbed her feet, I pushed once and out she was. DH was with me the entire time, there were a zillion people in there... enough for in case there had been problems with either or both babies, and everything worked out fine. Sabrina did spend an hour in the special care nursery because of a little water on her lungs. DH went with her, and they were back with Sydney and I within 2 hours.

Same here...no one left between the births except or a few nurses called for an emergency c next door (not me, thankfully!). These guys were vaginal with no meds. Only 13 minutes of down time, if you can even call it that. The second one was easy compared to the hours of contractions and pushing for the first! They didn't make me take anything and it was fine, although I delived in an OR just in case. GL!

I stayed in the regular birthing room and didn't have any additional nurses in the room. Of course the OR was just pretty much outside the door, but none of that was needed. The first one came out and the dr. broke the water for second baby and 3 pushes later she was out. 4 minutes apart. They stay with you the whole time. We only have one nurse who checked over both babies. I think the hospital was short handed that day and thats why we only had the one nurse. After both babies where out then the placentas came out.

Same here. My babes were 5 mins apart, 2nd one footling breech so the midwife and doc were trying with all their might to get him out as soon as possible. They need to be quick as the cervix starts to close. The hardest part for me was the placenta. It took the longest as it was two fused into one big one. My cervix actually closed on its way out! I had to push more for the placenta than for the babies COMBINED! My two just flew out! lol  it all happened so fast I was in total shock of what was going on. I think I may be an odd one out as my labor was way fast. husband was there the whole time. he got to cut the 2nd ones cord and then he went to where the babies were being observed and taken care of. then they sent one with him to the nicu while the other went with me. they both came back an hour or so later when his respitory problems were better.

thanks everyone for your reassurance. I am debating hiring a doula or someone who will be there to be on my side, but it seems like you all had plenty of support throughout both deliveries
