Hi. My twins are 7 weeks adjusted age. We have no real schedule during the day. I mostly just feed them whenever they seem to be hungry (usually every 3 to 4 hours). Between feedings, they usually sleep some and "play" some.

I've been reading other posts where it seems that other people's twins have a certain number of naps of day. Is there an age where they can start to have "fixed" nap times? My boys are starting to sleep longer at night and I'd really like them to get onto a more fixed schedule with feedings at regular intervals and real naps.

Any tips? Or is it still too early?

Our naps were a mess until 5-6 months, which is also when they started sleeping through. Have you checked out our schedule Wiki? It would be a great place to start, and maybe figure out what to work towards!

Mine were about 5 months (actual) or so when we started falling into a morning nap routine. At 7 weeks they did the exact same thing you are describing about your boys. Give it time and dont push yourself to get on too much of a schedule too soon or you will drive yourself crazy (I did). But they were on about a 3 hour feeding schedule still...sometimes 2.5 if they were screaming.

We followed the pattern "Eat, play, sleep. Repeat" for the first 5 months or so. My twins were good sleepers and it was more like they could only handle being up for a few hours at a time before falling asleep again (usually in the infant-car-seat-in the stroller being walked or in the swing. LOVED the swings starting at about 8 weeks). They pretty much determined their own nap schedule - They probably napped 4-5 times during the day the first 5 months, around 6-7 months they were down to 3 naps, and then automatically dropped their early morning nap around 8 months.
Now they are down to 2 naps at a year.

If you look in the first year handbook at the top of the forum page there are sleep schedules (either under sleep or eating schedules, I can't remember) where people posted their typical schedule by month. I found that very helpful as we moved from stage to stage.

    Good luck!

It was right at the 12 week adjusted mark that naps started falling into a regular routine for us. The one thing I do to try to keep them synchronized is when one baby wakes up from a nap, I wake the other (assuming it has been at least an hour), that way they are pretty much awake and tired around the same time. Naps are at different times each day (usually within a 45 minute window), depending how early they wake up, but the routine is the same, play, eat, sleep, nap.

We were also ones that didn't start a nap "routine" until about 5 months. It didn't actually settle into a routine until about 6 or so.

Naps start getting organized & predictable at about 12-16 weeks adjusted age. Some babies do ok with a by the clock schedule, others do better with a certain amount of time awake between naps. Mine are always ready to go down 1.5-2 hrs after they woke up from a nap (used to be 1-1.5 hrs when they were younger). I love the flexibility of doing it this way - I know what to expect, but they get the rest they need. Some naps are longer/shorter than others, so if you're going by the clock, you can easily wind up with a wake time that's way too long or short.

Also, if your babies are hungry every 3-4 hrs, that sounds pretty regular to me! :) Again, I wouldn't try to push a clock schedule for this, especially so early. You are doing a WONDERFUL thing for them by feeding them whenever they're hungry.

As the babies get older, a routine will emerge naturally, without you having to work at it. Meanwhile, you are doing GREAT! Keep up the good work! :)

At 7 weeks, we had no real schedule either. With the twins it was more like 4 months until we had one.

With Katie it was at 3 months.
