She is 13 months old and seems to have these extreme vomiting episodes that re-occur every two months or so. She ends up violently vomiting to the point of vomiting up green stuff which is when the ped tells them to take her to the hospital. Each time is the same....they go to the hospital and they take x-rays which consistently show that she is really really constipated - like backed up for miles constipated. It is so odd because she has regular bowel movements and even had one this morning before her vomiting episode began. I mean we are talking violent vomiting beginning usually while she is in the crib napping. It is so constant that my sister cannot even take her to the hospital herself because she needs someone in the back seat constantly mopping up the vomit. This time it happened with not even a month between the previous episode.
I believe that the last time they took her in for some type of an exam where she had to drink something and have a scope done for some type of either an upper or lower gi test. It turned out normal.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this or experienced it?

I just moved this thread over for you.

I hope you get some answers about your niece. That sounds so weird.

No real advice -- I know in adults they can have liquid leakage which is a sign of constipation. I'd be wondering about enough water in the diet -- who is making the formula and are they making it correctly. I'd even water it down a bit to give them a bit more water in their diet. At 13 months old I'd be strongly looking at pears everyday, pear juice, oatmeal, raisins, figs, prunes. So instead of apple juice use pear juice with water to drink. Watch out for bananas they are very constipating. Possibly get a referral to a Pedi and a dietician. Some children are more prone to constipation but this child is experiencing severe. A journal to record the size and number of stools is really important to tell the Pedi.

good luck please tell us how it turns out for you.

If she is extremely constipated, it makes sense that she is continually throwing up....there's absolutely no place for the food to go but up. I've personally dealt with this with my daughter even before she turned one. I tried giving her the juice, fruits, more fluids, etc etc., but honestly they probably won't work because she is so beyond clogged up that she needs something stonger to clean her out. I would suggest fleets babylax...not the little round suppository ones that you stick in their bottoms and let sit, but the one with an applicator that you squeeze the solution into their bottom and pull it out. It's an absolute miracle worker! Basically when her diaper is getting changed, put the applicator in and squeeze the bulb at the end to inject the fluid, then fasten her diaper shut. Yes, it's slightly uncomfortable for them but by no means does it hurt them. If she is truly constipated, it will work immediately! I found that if you let them walk around or just be active once you insert it in then it works faster than letting them lie there. Just tell her to be prepared to change a few diapers within about a 10 min. span because it works that well. Once she is finally cleared out...then make sure she keeps up with a heavier diet of fruit and 4 oz of juice a day. You can find it at any Target store (ask the pharmacist) or usually grocery stores carries it. I know it sounds crazy, but honestly my daughter was so bad that nothing but this worked for her....she was so constipated and not gaining weight that once we cleared her up she gained 4 lbs from 9-12 months. good luck and i hope this helped

Does she have a bowel obstruction? They can actually vomit poop if this happens. This was one thing that had to be ruled out when Andrew had pyloric stenosis as a baby.

I used the infant glycerin suppositories for Elizabeth (she would routinely go 10 days without pooping) and they worked fast!

Have they checked for pyloric stenosis? I remember that Eleanor was tested for that (some sort of xray I think) when we were dealing with her reflux issues.

Good luck to your sis and niece...
