Yesterday I had an appointment with the perinatologist, and they measured my cervix. They said it's about 2.8-2.9 cm. I asked if that was okay and they said that they don't get worried until about 2.5 cm. It seems like I don't have far to go...how quickly can a cervix shorten by a few cm? I think my OB will be monitoring every two weeks from here on out, so maybe I don't need to worry about it too much?

That is good that they will be monitoring it closely, and looking for change. It is the change over a short period of time that could be a cause for concern.

To be pefectly honest with you, when mine measured 2.9cm, I was put on bedrest, and that was at 24 weeks. I had a very conservative OB and started seeing an even MORE conservative peri shortly thereafter.

Just take it easy as much as possible, and stay hydrated. Keep us updated on your progress!

the cervix changes too... so it'll fluctuate, but as long as it doesn't continue to get shorter and shorter, you're probably fine. Take it easy if you can- stay horizontal as much as possible. I was put on "modified bed rest" at 27 weeks for a 2.4 cm cervix, and I've made it over a month, so far so good!

Like the others have said, it is not necesarily your length but if there is any rapid change in length. I was put on bedrest when I was measuring under 2 at 29 weeks. My peri told me they definitely want to see longer than 2 until at least 30 weeks.

I was put on bedrest when I measured 2.5 at 28 weeks, and also had some funneling. Rest horizontally, as much as possible and drink your water. [IMG]

Hi Sara , Im exactly a week behind you ...Ive been having cervical checks since week 14, and mine keeps going down.....as of last week I was at 3.2 my ob wanted me to see a peri due to the changes my peri recommended to wait n see what happens, and didnt think a cerclage was necessary unless I get down to 2.5 ....Im going in again on Tues ...and requesting I get checked at least once a week or twice a week ...its so scary isnt it ??

    Good Luck

I've had quite the experience with my cervix. I was over 4cm in December, in January when I went in I measured a little over 3cm, at the end of January I measured 2.4cm, went back the following week and had held steady, 3 weeks later was down to .5 cm and was put on total bedrest. I'd been in bed for a week and went back to get measured again and was back up to 2.1 cm. I'm almost 33 weeks along so they said I just need to stay on bedrest for a few more weeks and then they will let me have activity back. Staying off your feet can make a huge difference but you need to either be reclined or laying down to really relieve the pressure.

When I was 23 weeks they measured me and I was only 2.5 cm. I was placed on bedrest that day and have been going back weekly for monitoring. It has been a month since I was put on bedrest and my cervix is down to 2 cm. My Peri said that while I'm continuing to shrink that it's not at a fast rate and that he's hopeful if I continue bedrest, progesterone shots, and as long as it doesn't shrink any faster then I'll probably make it to 34 weeks. No mention has been made yet of hospital bedrest.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I will keep you posted--and for those of you on bed rest now best wishes for all to go well.

My cervix was good around the end of Dec but I started having some cramping and wasn't feeling well so I e-mailed my doc about it before I went out of state for a baby shower. They had me come in the next day and we found that my cervix had funneled down to 1.3 cm (at 22 1/2 weeks). I was put on hospital bedrest for a little over 5 weeks and it was only up to 1.4 cm. They let me come home on bedrest and I went back last Tuesday and it is 8mm now (at 32 weeks). My doctor wanted me to make it past 32 weeks and considered it my safe zone because I had a round of steroid shots at 24 weeks.
I am still on bedrest and taking it easy because that is probably the only reason I haven't had these babies yet.
Definitely rest when you can and try to take it easy. Like PP said the cervix can change and be longer or shorter at times.

I'm not absolutly sure, but I have heard that ideally you should be around 3cm. Not to worry you because obviously they are going to be keeping a very close watch on you. I would try to take it easy as much as possible, even if they havn't told you to yet. It is only going to help. If you are seeing your ob every 2 weeks they will probably be checking it and they should take a look at it at each u/s. Just take it easy you want those babies to stay in there!!!
