    how much is normal?

our DC have not had any issues with reflux (knock on wood), but their spit up can range from a little (hiccup with a little extra) to the one I got tonight - tried to feed DD 8oz (usually she takes 7) and I got the full extra ounce all over my shoulder - soaked through two shirts. Usually when they do spit up, it is only about 1/4 to 1/2 an ounce.

    Hope it helps

My two spit up after every feeding and it was reflux. They did not have the pain associated with it, but they spit up. If they are spitting up after every feeding and if it's not right after the feeding then I would talk to your ped about it. Mine never seemed in pain and would eat fine, but would spit up after every feeding. If you are concerned and questioning it, I would talk to your ped, can't hurt.

ETA: My two were gaining weight so that was not an issue. An upper GI confirmed reflux and the only symptom was spitting up.

I'm no expert, but I read an article in this month's Parenting magazine that said . . .
Normal spit up can be mild to moderate from the mouth or nose without pain or discomfort and its most common during or shortly after feedings. Its more serious if they spit up or vomit frequently, scream and cry, refuse feedings, or don't gain weight.

I take that to mean if they are spitting up nearly as much as they are taking in, they probably aren't getting much in the way of nutrients. We've been very fortunate in this area, but both of mine are on 2 kinds of reflux medicine. We've had a couple of huge spit up episodes though and they were hungry way before they normally would have been probably because their stomach was completely emptied on my shirt!

My DD throws up everything she ate at least once a day. She's been to the doc three times for it. They say it's no problem because she's gaining and she'll outgrow it. I feel bad for her though.

As long as they are gaining, it should be ok. They are on meds for it? Are you thickening with cereal? Sorry in advance if I have asked you before!

My DS tends to spit up alot if he overeats or if he guzzles it down too fast, as long as they are eating well, gaining weight, and don't seem to be in pain I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Justin spit up after every bottle till he was 1 year old. No more bottles equalled no more spit up. He was never in any pain & was always smiling when it happened. Dr said he was fine. Cody didn't start spitting up till after his last round of shots. It isn't nearly as bad as Justins so I just live with it.

The thing to keep in mind though is if it does happen to be reflux and it's not treated it can cause long term damage. If it is reflux you really need to get them on meds. Spitting up can be the only symptom too.

they are absolutely gaining (3 lbs each since birth!). they aren't in pain. my dd had reflux and she was in pain. with her the problem was very obvious. the boys aren't spitting up all the time, though. just sometimes. i will talk to the ped about it, and will also pay attention to if the amount of spit up is higher when they've eaten more. maybe i'm overfeeding them?
